Everyone who has traveled on a Pennsylvania state road has probably noticed the blue and white signs that list an individual or organization who has adopted a section of that roadway to keep it clean.
PennDOT started the adopt-a-highway program in 1990. This program now has some 7,100 participating people and organizations. PennDOT is now looking to expand this program.
Organizations or individuals who participate in this program agree to adopt a section of roadway for two years and collect litter on it at least four times a year. PennDOT stated that more than 17,000 miles of roads across the state are currently adopted by organizations and individuals.
According to PennDOT officials, the adopt-a-highway program makes a huge difference in Pennsylvania’s ability to keep its highways as free from litter as possible. PennDOT Secretary Allen Biehler stated that he would like to thank these groups for their participation and welcome new volunteers to this effort.
PennDOT will provide volunteers with orange safety vests, work gloves, and trash bags.
Organizations or individuals interested in adopting a section highway are encouraged to contact their local PennDOT county maintenance office and ask for the adopt-a-highway coordinator. They may also visit their website at www.dot.state.pa.us.
