Lack of hitting and mental and physical errors killed the Tyrone Lady Eagle softball team for the second game in a row. Playing on back-to-back days because of the wicked spring weather causing postponements which need to be made up in the very short remainder of the season, the Lady Eagles were able to manage just one hit in a 10-0 inning loss to Penns Valley, at Spring Mills, on Wednesday.
The Tyrone girls softball squad is in the midst of a brutal week-ending schedule, that included 2005 District champ and 2006 District runner-up Bald Eagle Area, on Tuesday, and will continue with once-beaten Mount Union this afternoon, at Mount Union.
“We are not hitting the ball well and had a couple of mental errors which hurt us early in the game,” said Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “We are not playing with confidence.”
Megan Turiano had the only Tyrone hit in the first inning but was left at first. The Lady Eagles would not get a runner as far as second base until the fourth inning. With two out in the fourth, Lindsay Christine reached on an error and Teanna Kobuck walked. Casie Glashauser grounded out to first to end the inning.
Penns Valley scored two runs in the first after Tyrone had two outs. Then in the second inning Kasey Packer reached first on a Tyrone error, moved to second on a walk and scored on a double by Rachel Myers and then Jamie Leitch and Myers both scored on a triple by Toot McCool. McCool scored on Erin VanVaclor groundout to shortstop.
From that point on, the Lady Eagles were forced to play catch-up, down six runs, and Penns Valley hurler Pam Heinricks made sure that wouldn’t happen, allowing just the single by Turiano, striking out four and walking one.
Lady Eagle sophomore right-hander Laura Thompson walked three and had no strikeouts in going the distance.
The Tyrone/Mount Union game will start at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.
