Over the past week and a half, the Kiwanis 13/14 year-old VFW Teener League Baseball Team earned two more wins and one loss. The team\’s overall record improved to 5-2.
Friday, May 11
The Kiwanis team faced Hollidaysburg Team II. Kiwanis won this game by a score of 17-5 in four and 1/2 innings of play. The team capitalized on 12 walks and pounded out eight hits. Korry Cowher went 3-for-4 with two RBI\’s, while A.J. Welsh went 2-for-2 with two RBI\’s. Caleb Snyder recorded a double as well.
Trevor Jackson started the game on the mound but James Russell came in relief in the top of the third inning and went the rest of the distance to pick up the pitching victory.
Eric Sweeney took the loss for Hollidaysburg.
Monday, May 14
The Kiwanis team traveled to Bellwood to face the undefeated Pinecroft Fireman team. The Pinecroft team pounded out 10 hits and beat Kiwanis by a score of 11-2.
The Kiwanis team managed only five hits off of Bellwood\’s pitching staff. There was a let down on defense by the Kiwanis team recording 10 errors during the game.
Beech earned the pitching victory for Pinecroft Firemen, while Korry Cowher suffered his first loss of the season for Kiwanis. Krepps, Patterson, and DeGol each had two hits for Pinecroft Firemen, while James Russell recorded two hits for Kiwanis.
Friday, May 18th
The Kiwanis team hosted another Hollidaysburg team known as Phoenix Rehabilitation at Ferner Field.
Early in the game, the Kiwanis team broke out to a 2-0 lead and held that lead until the bottom half of the fourth inning, when the Phoenix team erupted for seven runs due to several errors, walks, and several timely hits. At that point, the Kiwanis team made pitching change and brought in Trevor Jackson, who was able to strike out the next batter and end the at bat for the Phoenix team.
The Kiwanis team started their comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring a run, and then added four more in the fifth to tie the game.
Both teams scored one run each in the sixth to tie it at 8-8.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, James Russell worked an at bat for a walk, then Marcus Wagner came up to bat and the run and hit signal was given. Marcus hit a line drive to shortstop which was caught and turned into an easy double play for the Phoenix team. Jeff Rawson then came up to bat with two outs and crushed a double to left field that looked like it was a home run but landed just short of the fence. Derrick Fisher was up next and hit a Texas league single to right field scoring Rawson and the winning run.
Jeremy Miller had a solid hitting performance going 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI\’s, while Korry Cowher and Jeff Rawson each went 2-for-4.
Trevor Jackson earned the pitching victory throwing three and 1/3 innings striking out six and allowing only one run.
