For the second straight day, Martin Oil faced a George B. Kelley Federation team with an 0-3 record. And for the second straight day an early four-run inning did them in, with Sheetz jumping out to a 7-0 advantage before Martin Oil could get on the board in an 11-6 Sheetz win at Stadium Drive Field in Bellwood.
Sheetz jumped on Martin Oil for four runs, before the hosts had a chance to hit, and then added three more in the second for a big quick lead that Martin Oil never recovered from.
Both teams played loose on defense, with a total of 10 errors in the game, four by Martin Oil and six by Sheetz.
Martin Oil finally put three scores on the board in the bottom of the second.
Justin Manning walked to open the frame and with two outs Chad Coho reached on an error. Jimmy Watters walked to load the bases, before Brian Hostler singled to score Manning. Trey Mock singled to drive in Coho, who had stolen second base, and Watters also came home on the throw from the outfield.
Sheetz scored four more runs in the top of the fourth, although Martin Oil scored three times in the fifth to slice the deficit to 11-6, but couldn’t get the clutch hit when they needed it.
Nate Gray started the fifth by going all the way around to third base on two errors by Sheetz second baseman Kyle Sheriden. Cameron Irvin singled to score Gray, was balked to second and scored on a single by Manning. Irvin scored on an error by the Sheetz shortstop on a grounder by Justin Miller.
Martin Oil pitchers Nate Gray, Brian Hostler and Justin Miller struck out a total of 11 batters, with Miller fanning the side in his one inning on the mound, in the top of the seventh, and issued a season-low one walk.
Martin Oil will travel to Central High School in Martinsburg on Friday for a 6 p.m. contest against Barkman Oil.
