Tyrone golfers were back in action Wednesday afternoon at the Sinking Valley Country Club golf course, hosting Bellefonte and Indian Valley. The weather was cool and breezy, and after rain on Tuesday, the rough was high and many areas were wet, setting the stage for some tough golf.
Tyrone was able to win by eight shots over Bellefonte, and squeak a one shot win out over Indian Valley.
“ We were tied with Indian valley with our six spot players not yet in, all the coaches added the scores and we had things figured at a tie,” said Tyrone golf coach Greg Ferguson. “I talked to Eric Loose on the 15th tee and he told me the front was good, but he was having extreme troubles on the back, so at the coaches table, we did not think there would be any changes in the final tally. But when Eric turned his score in, we were surprised to see that Eric played his last four holes at two-over par, and posted a 92, so we were able to throw out a 93 and thus pull out a squeaker. Eric has a lot of ability, so I\’m not surprised that he finished that well, I was just surprised that when not doing well that late in the round, he was able to stay patient and come through like he did, I\’m pretty proud of him, especially after posting a 102 last week and almost not making the squad this week. We did not have our best showing today, even though the course was tough, we were very lucky that we did not lose one or both matches. Our guys struggled all the way through the line up, but at this point one is a good as 21, so we take the wins and move forward.”
Steady freshman Jimmy Ferguson led the way for the Golden Eagles posting an 82, followed by Jason Tuskovich with an 88, then last week’s medalist Ryan Ruscio posting a score of 90, and Eric Loose from the six spot with 92. Matt Brooks shot a 93 and Kyle Updyke had a score of 98.
Tyrone will be back in action next Tuesday, at Sinking Valley, going up against rival Bellwood-Antis, and then finish out the regular season at Iron Masters on Thursday, against Central and Huntingdon.
“We need to be a little better at our practice,” said Ferguson. “The kids know they will be hard to beat, and that kind of thinking almost cost us a match today. We have a real good chance to be undefeated in the Mountain League and go on to win the Mountain League championship, so hopefully the kids can find some focus and finish strong, they deserve to do so.”
