The Tyrone Legion started their George B. Kelley Federation season on a losing note at Vets Field against Corporal Miller on Tuesday evening. The Tyrone entry played their opener, a 7-5 loss, with five guys in the lineup, who had not been to bat in from two to five years, as a result of regulars out of the lineup due to school activities.
“These kids played with heart and played hard to keep Tyrone Legion in the game,” said first year Tyrone Legion manager Chris Futrick.
The Tyrone bats never came alive until there were two outs in the top of the seventh inning. With just one more out to get, Tyrone Legion stretched Cpl. Miller nearly to the limit.
Shane Walker came up to start the rally with a hard single to right field. Donnie Hunter followed with a base hit to left. Then it was Tyler Golden’s turn and he plated both runners with a single to center. Eric Desch, the Tyrone Legion starting pitcher crew a base on balls, and a hot smash, which the Cpl. Miller third baseman couldn’t handle drove in both Golden and Desch. Sims attempted to leg out a double on the hit and although Tyrone fans thought the tag was high, was called out for the final out of the ballgame.
Futrick and assistant coaches Don Hunter and Ron Iddings all said that they were proud of the way the kids played, with only a couple of practices and five people that didn’t have any.
“When we have all our kids here, we will be a good team,” said Futrick. “We made some errors and it cost us the game.”
Desch took the loss for Tyrone Legion, but was hurt by his defense. Desch struck out four and walked four.
Donnie Hunter and Tyler Golden each had two hits for Tyrone Legion, with Hunter getting a double for the team’s only extra-base knock.
Chris Carper led Corporal Miller (1-2) with three hits and two RBI
Tyrone Legion (0-1) is back in action this afternoon at the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex, when they play Locker Room (1-0) from Hollidaysburg
