Everyone is invited to a special event tomorrow to help celebrate an incredible milestone in the life of longtime Tyrone resident, Helen Eschbach.
The youngest of seven children born to John and Mildred Priest on November 4, 1907, Helen will celebrate her 100th birthday on Sunday, November 4, 2007.
A special open house will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m. for anyone who would like to stop by and wish Helen a happy birthday.
Born in Tyrone, Helen grew up on 11th Street and Logan Avenue. Always one with a healthy sense of humor, Helen was quick to add she grew older in Tyrone, but wasn’t sure she ever “grew up”.
On May 29, 1928 Helen married George Eschbach and the couple resided on Columbia Avenue, where Helen spent most of her life. They had two sons, George and John Eschbach.
Helen was very active in the community throughout the years.
At one point she was in charge of the snack bar at the hospital when it first opened. She also worked with the band mothers, manning the concession stand at football games.
Helen was on the board at Epworth Manor and taught Sunday school at UBC, now Christ United Methodist Church, for 69 years. She also sang in the church choir there. Helen enjoyed helping at church and was very active in numerous church activities.
Others may recognize Helen from her work at Engelman’s or the clothing store, Pringle Shop, which was located where the High Rise currently stands.
She also worked in Gardner’s Clothing Store which was owned by she and her husband.
When asked what she attributes her long life to, Helen said she wasn’t sure but added “living a good, clean life and trusting in the Lord.”
Some of her longevity may also be attributed to her positive attitude. Never one to say no, Helen was always willing to lend a helping hand. But, those who know her said not only did she never say no, but she never took no for an answer.
Helen enjoys visiting with friends and family and often went around town stopping to visit anyone in need of a friend. She was always helpful and many times would cook a meal to bring with her on her visits.
When not visiting, Helen enjoyed needlework and made quilts for everyone in her family.
Currently residing in the Lutheran Home in Hollidaysburg, Helen is excited for her return trip to Tyrone tomorrow.
