The Mountain Athletic Football Conference All-Star teams have been selected, and the two local teams are well represented.
Tyrone, winner of the MAFC championship for the third straight year outright, after sharing the title with Bellwood-Antis and Philipsburg-Osceola in 2004, placed a total of 19 on the team, while Bellwood-Antis has 10 spots.
Two teams were chosen this year on offense and defense, with multiple picks at several positions on the second team, taking the place of what in other leagues might be both second team and honorable mentions.
Leading the MAFC all-league selections is Golden Eagle Shayne Tate, who was a unanimous First Team selection at running back on offense and defensive back on defense. Joining Tate on the First Team offensive squad are fellow senior classmate Shane Emigh (wide out) and junior Jarrod Good (tackle).
Selected for the Second Team Offense were Eagle seniors Brock Anders (center), Josh Bradley (guard), and Nick Wilson (tackle), and juniors Matt Murray (guard), John Shaffer (punter and tight end), and Mark Mingle (running back).
On the defensive side, Tate was the only Tyrone selection to make the First Team, but the top ranked Eagles (35 points given up) had eight Second Team selections, including Murray (end), Bradley and Shaffer (D-line), Mingle and senior Jesse Walk (linebackers), Emigh and senior Brandon Gehret (d-backs) and sophomore Levi Reihart (punter).
Tate was named to the Second Team a year ago on both offense, as a wide receiver and defense as a specialist. Shaffer, who was selected to three Second Team positions this year (tight end, D-line and punter), was also a Second Team pick in 2006 on the defensive line.
Bellwood-Antis is led by senior Second Team All-State lineman Anthony Jenkins, who repeats a MAFC First Team selection on offense as a tackle, and moves up from a 2006 nod on the Second Team on the defensive line to a First Team spot in 2007.
Jenkins is the only Blue Devil on the First Team Offensive unit, but is joined by junior Adam Kovac (center), and senior classmates Alan Wertz (wide out) and Brandon Humphreys (running back) on the MAFC Second Team.
On the First Team defensive squad, Jenkins is joined by senior Bruno DeGol, who had over 100-tackles for the second straight year, at linebacker.
Also on the Second Team Defense for Bellwood-Antis are Justin Miller (end), Justin Manning (D-back and specialist) and Brandon Humphreys (punter).
Each team in the MAFC also had a scholar/athlete selected. Alan Wertz was chosen from Bellwood-Antis, and Josh Bradley was the pick for Tyrone.
