The TASB reorganized last evening for the upcoming 2008 year, administering an oath of office to all the newly elected school board members to four-year terms.
Those incumbents included: Raymond W. Detwiler, Peter L. Dutrow, Norman E. Huff, Luther J. Laird and Lee R. Stover.
The board also approved unanimously for Stover to remain as board president and James Crawford to remain as board vice-president. Brian Bressler was named the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA) Liaison to represent the district. Amy Stever will remain as the Employee Relations Contact.
In other business, Student Activities and Services Committee Chairperson Bressler commended the Tyrone Area High School football team and coaches for another successful season. He also congratulated the Bellwood-Antis football team in its district championship and PIAA A Eastern Quarter-final birth.
The school board recognized in the Academic Spotlight, 14 fourth grade TAES students who participated in a two-week program with Artist-In-Residence Marianne McAuliffe. Second, third and the rest of fourth grade students also participated.
McAuliffe’s residency was funded by the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA), the PA Council of Arts, the school district and PTO. She specializes in Native American Folk Art, Native American flute playing, crafts, dance and storytelling.
Elementary music teacher Myra Hess and elementary art teacher Ann Yaniello chose McAuliffe for the school’s residency. The participating core students who displayed their experience to the board included: Anna Baran, Chance Burke, Kristi Carroll, Elizabeth Conrad, Brandon Decker, Amber Gill, Wyatt Hoff, Erin Kephart, Lance Loose, Zacharia Soellner, Eliza Tangen, Erika Voyzey, Kendra Walker and Ashley Watters.
The students displayed their artwork to the board and performed two Native American songs on their flutes, which they received and were allowed to keep for participating in the program.
The group of core students were chosen through a lottery system in each of the classes, and the criteria to be able to participate was simply interest and being caught up on their homework.
Board President Stover spoke on behalf of the board and thanked the kids and the parents for their interest and knowledge gained from their experience.
