The area is in store for a one-two punch of potent winter storms in the upcoming days. The first storm is spreading its snow and ice into the region today. The second storm is expected to become a major “nor’easter” this weekend, according to AccuWeather.com.
Several area school districts delayed or canceled classes for today.
A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 p.m. this evening.
Today’s weather brought a mix of sleet and freezing rain in the morning, with freezing rain and sleet expected to continue in the afternoon.
Snow and sleet was expected to accumulate from 1 to 3 inches, with ice accumulation of up to one quarter of an inch. Temperature-wise, it felt much cooler as highs were only to reach the lower 30s.
Tonight’s area weather calls for scattered snow showers, with a 40 percent chance of freezing rain and sleet. Temperatures tonight could reach the upper 20s.
As this storm rapidly departs from the Northeast tonight, attention will turn toward the next winter storm, deemed the caboose of the recent train of storms, according to AccuWeather.
The storm is expected to spread its snow into the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic Saturday. During the overnight hours into Sunday, the storm is expected to intensify into a major “nor’easter” across the Northeast.
Saturday’s weather calls for a 70 percent chance of morning snow, then snow likely in the afternoon with light accumulation. Temperatures will be cooler, with highs around 30.
Saturday night is when the heavy snow is expected to begin, with the chance of snow near 100 percent.
Sunday is expected to see a 50 percent chance of scattered snow showers, with highs around 30.
