The Tyrone Elks sponsors many youth activities in town, such as “Teenagers of the Month”.
Those Tyrone Area High School seniors chosen are judged on the basis of multiple achievements, including character, leadership, service, citizenship and scholastic achievement.
The Elks then hosts an end of the school year banquet, in which all “Teenagers of the Month” and their parents are invited.
For September, Brandon Gehret was chosen as a “Teenager of the Month”. His school activities include football, basketball, baseball and track. Out of school Brandon participates in a church group and works at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park.
Also chosen for September was Kenneth Nearhoof. His school activities include POPS Extension, “Into the Woods”, Spanish Club and Key Club. His work experience includes Wineland’s Equipment Inc. and Forshey’s Inc.
Shayne Tate was chosen as an October “Teenager of the Month”. In school, he has participated in football, Key Club, wrestling and track. Special honors include taking third place in National History Day and being chosen as an “Athlete of the Week”. Work experience includes Austin’s Texas Hot Dogs.
Also chosen for October was Sarah Cox. Her school activities include track, National Honor Society, Community Outreach, FBLA and basketball. Out of school, she has baby-sat and completed community service. Sarah’s special honors include National Honor Society, student council, SADD Club and a Community Service Award. Work experience includes DelGrosso’s, Old Navy and Family Chill-n-Grill.
Sarah Halter was chosen for a November “Teenager of the Month”. Her school activities include track, soccer, Jazz Band, Tri-M and National Honor Society. Out of school she volunteered hours at the Tyrone Thrift Store. Her special honor includes the Challenge Program winner of the highest GPA in 10th grade. She also has work experience at DelGrosso’s Amusement Park.
Also chosen for November was Kelly Pearson. Her school activities include volleyball, swimming, Key Club and Youth Leadership. Special honors include Honor Society and Academic Academy. Her work experience includes Tyrone Borough and Hollidaysburg YMCA.
