Nearly 2,500 Pennsylvania FFA members gathered for the 79th annual FFA Mid-winter Convention on Monday, Jan. 7, during the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg. Among the chapters participating was the Tyrone Area FFA. “Today we recognize the accomplishments of Pennsylvania’s future agricultural leaders,” said Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff. “With nearly 8,000 members, Pennsylvania FFA is, as their mission statement says, making a positive difference in the lives of students by promoting their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.” Tyrone Area FFA members had the opportunity to meet Wolff prior to the convention. Also in attendance were Lieutenant Governor Catherine Baker Knoll, Education Secretary Dr. Gerald Zahorchak and Deputy Secretary Diane Castlebuono, Deputy Agriculture Secretaries Russell Redding and Bill Wehry, Pennsylvania State University College of Agricultural Science Dean Robert Steele and Associate Dean Marcos Fernandez. Amanda Conrad received the coveted Keystone FFA Degree which was awarded to 285 members. The degree is the highest recognition bestowed to a member at the state level, with only three percent of Pennsylvania FFA members holding the degree. The Pennsylvania FFA Alumni also donated more than 200 new FFA jackets to first-year members. Tyrone members Samantha Walls, Jessie Wheeland, Mark McMonagle and Sara Stone all received a jacket as a prize for a PA FFA State Essay Contest they entered.
