The Tyrone Area High School will present “Save Darfur: Voices of Genocide Survivors” on Friday, January 25 in the high school library.
Dr. Lee Ann De Reus, Penn State Altoona Associate Professor of Human Development & Family Studies and Women Studies, and student Wendy Hartman will make the presentation.
This moving account of their 2007 journey to the Gaga refugee camp in Chad will provide an overview of the crisis in Sudan, highlight the stories of 25 women genocide survivors, and offer simple ways individuals can make a difference.
The public is invited to join the high school social studies classes for these programs.
The program will be given during the fourth through seventh periods and each program will run for 40 minutes beginning at 10:38, 11:30, 12:52 and 1:38. The programs will be held in the high school library. The public must sign-in at the front office upon entering the building.
The program has been arranged through Mr. Cummins McNitt, Social Studies Department, and Mr. Stephen Everhart, English Department.
“Save Darfur: Voices of Genocide Survivors” will be followed by a youth rally, fast and concert to be held at the Bishop Guilfoyle High School on February 2, from 7 to 11 p.m.
Admission to the concert is $8, which includes the show and food. If you wear a Save Darfur shirt, admission is only $4. Funds raised from the concert will provide the following: $3 – one year protection for each refugee woman; $15 – a solar cooker for each refugee family; $36 – a backpack of supplies for each refugee child.
