Senior track and field athletes participated in their last dual meet at the Tyrone oval Tuesday afternoon. Both the girls and boys teams over the past four seasons have had a considerable amount of success and fond memories. In 2006 the girls and boys teams won the now dissolved MAC conference which was only the second time in school history both boys and girls won their respective conference in the same year.
Seniors Sarah Halter, Chelsea Brocket, and Alexis Murray contributed to that Championship. All three senior girls won first place against West Branch to close out their track careers on a positive notes.
On the boy’s side, Josh Bradley, Brandon Gehret, Shayne Tate, Shane Emigh, Nick Wilson, and Jamar Stansbury helped Tyrone maintain the streak! The streak, never having a losing season, was thought to be in jeopardy this season with the likes of bigger schools on the schedule that included Central Mountain, Lewistown, Indian Valley, etc. In fact the Golden Eagles would have won the big school division and lost to a strong BEA team in the small school division. Bald Eagle Area went undefeated and will enter districts as the team favorite.
“I can’t say enough about our senior group,” Tyrone’s long-time coach Yaniello said.” Lack of numbers has plagued the Lady Eagles the last two years and we really appreciate the girls who came out and worked hard to achieve their personal goals. Our senior boys once we got everyone healthy and focused stepped up and help lead our team to some big victories and outstanding performances.”
The Tyrone boys dominated the Warriors, winning 16 of 18 events for a final score of 113 to 37.
“Five off our seniors won their events and the other two placed to help with the victory,” Yaniello said.
Shane Emigh won the Triple Jump (37-4 1/2), Josh Bradley placed first in the discus (109-6 1/2), Brandon Gehret won the 300 Intermediate Hurdles (44.5), John Franco ran his best time of the season in the 100 (11.28), and Shayne Tate was on the winning 400 relay team. Other winners for the Golden Eagle were Dustin Elder 1600 (5:12) and 3200 (11:25), Ben Ingle won the 800 (2:20), 400 (54.6), and ran with Larry Glace, Nathan Kruis, and Ross Black on the winning 1600 Relay Team. Ross Black won the 110 Hurdles, Mark Mingle was a double winner in the Shot Put (44-6) and Javelin (136-8). Steady Kyle Updike placed first in the High Jump (6-0), and Larry Glace won the Long Jump (19-7).
In the girls meet Tyrone had their best meet of the year losing by a close 77–62 to the Lady Warriors. The Lady Eagles won 11 or the 17 events contested but again were hurt by not being able to field two relay teams. Lady Eagles placing first were Sarah Halter 1600 (6:33) and 3200 (14:38), Lizzie Shields 200 (28.3), 400 (1:06) and ran with Christina Daugherty, Ashley Salyer, and Ashley Ford to win the 3200 Relay 11:30. Ashley Salyer won the 800 (2:43), Ashley For placed first in the Long Jump (13-2), Amy Lewis won the Shot Put (24-7), Chelsea Brockett was first in the discus (63-7) and Alexis Murray won the Javelin (89-9 1/2).
“It was great that our three senior girls, (Sarah Halter, Chelsea Brockett, and Alexis Murray) finished their dual meet career by winning their events,” Coach Yaniello said.
In a pre meet ceremony the track booster club presented each senior with a blanket and meet game manager, Luke Rhoades read a short introduction of each senior while they were receiving their blanket.
Next Tuesday the AA District Six Track and Field Meet will take place at Mansion Park in Altoona. Tyrone qualified a whopping 28 athletes for the district meet.
