For the second straight night, the Tyrone Golden Eagles had to forfeit at least three matches and lost the dual 43-32 to Altoona (11-15) in the Altoona High School Fieldhouse.
The Eagles (7-10) edged Altoona 26-26 in matches actually wrestled but picked up one forfeit and gave up three, to account for the difference.
The dual began at 130, where Anthony Romano was leading Kerry Bonsell 12-3 when he worked for the pin in 3:33, just a little more than a minute more than the time he pinned Bonsell at the Ziegler Tournament. Romano (27-7) posted two takedowns, a reversal and two sets of back points in the win.
That was the Eagles’s only win until Jeremy Barlett (145) and Cory Barnhart (215) temporarily stopped the streaking Mountain Lions until the lineup was turned over to the lightweights.
Barlett (18-9) and Dylan Swires were involved in a 2-2 match until Barlett wrapped up a cradle for the fall in 5:11. Barnhart, who moved up to wrestle 285. Tuesday night at Central Cambria, was back down to his usual 215, against Altoona. Barnhart led 2-1 after one period, scoring a takedown and giving up an escape. Barnhart (4-18) reversed Jesse Davis then put the Altoona sophomore on his back for the fall in 2:35.
At 103, Tyrone’s Ronnie Garbinsky (29-3) used four takedowns, an escape, reversal and a total of 11 nearfall points for a 22-3 technical fall over fellow freshman Wendell Myers.
A.J. Schopp (30-3) received Altoona’s only forfeit at 112, Schopp’s second straight freebie, after receiving two in a row to begin the season and just one in his next 29 matches.
Chase Weaver (12-14) provided the Eagles last win of the evening at 119, by shutting out Vince McCracken 7-0. McCracken was at a weight disadvantage after weighing in at 112, and Weaver used it to record a reversal and three back points in the middle stanza after a scoreless opening period. Another reversal in the third period ran the final margin to 7-0.
At 135, Cody Weaver (17-13) dropped a 13-5 major decision to Chris McCarthy, Jimmy Weston (9-18) lost a 15-0 tech fall to David McCloskey at 140, K.J. Walters pinned Dustin Weaver (1-24) in 2:57, at 189, Nick Sota pinned Dalaun Carroll (6-14) in 3:18 at 285, and Josh Potts had three takedowns in each period, a total of nine altogether, in a 21-9 major decision over Donnie Hunter (1-3) at 125, to close out the dual.
“It’s tough to have to give up three forfeits against a team like Altoona, but that’s the way things are,” said Tyrone coach Blair Packer. “We felt we had to get wins at certain places to win tonight and giving up 18 points dug a hole it was tough to get out of.
“Actually, I look at these last matches as culminating the season. The season is nothing more than preparation for the post-season. It is time for us to settle in and change our focus to an individual basis for the upcoming district tournament.”
The Tyrone junior high team pinned Roosevelt into submission in the preliminary dual meet, 54-37, at the Fieldhouse.
Zack Brown (85), Mark McMonigal (100), Michael Sleeth (105), Tyler Osterhout (110), Andrew Warrender (115), Christian Getz (122), Caleb Snyder (130), Kyle Ripka (155) and Joey Miller (250) all won by pin to provide all he points in the Little Eagles’ victory.
