Both Tyrone wrestlers got off to good starts at the Giant Center in Hershey at the PIAA State Wrestling Tournament this morning. Both will wrestle Friday morning in the quarterfinals, which begins at 8 a.m.
Eagle freshman Ronnie Garbinsky (37-3) edged Northeast Regional third placer Coltin Fought (38-6), a freshman from Benton High School by a 2-0 decision. Garbinsky will wrestle Jefferson-Morgan senior Brian Scritchfield (32-10), a fifth place finisher at the Southwest Regional, who defeated Jamie Welsh 5-4 in overtime. Garbinsky finished second at the Southwest Tournament, but did not wrestle Scritchfield.
Tyrone sophomore A. J. Schopp (37-4), a returning state runner-up, who was second last weekend at the Southwest Regional, shut out freshman Shane Rankin (36-4), a third place Northwest Regional finisher from Union City, 7-0. Schopp will face Northeast Regional champ Josh Malick (37-2), a senior from Mount Carmel, who knocked off Nick Blasone (37-12) a Southeast Regional fifth place medalist, from Bermudian Springs, 8-6.
