Undefeated Mount Union downs Golden Eagle wrestlers 37-25

Tyrone wrestling coach Blair Packer knew his Eagle wrestlers would have a tough time coming into the dual against unbeaten Mount Union in the Tyrone Senior High gymnasium. The dual began at 160 pounds, a weight class that favored Mount Union to the extreme and the Trojans ran away with the first four matches to jump up on the Eagles 21-0, then finished up with a major decision, a pin, and a forfeit win in three of the final four weights on the way to a 37-25 win.
Trailing 21-0, by the time the heavyweight match came up, Dalaun Carroll got the Golden Eagles on the scoreboard with a victory over Willie Grove. After a scoreless opening period, Carroll (1-4) gave up an escape to Grove, then took him down and notched three nearfall points, before Grove (9-5) reversed to narrow the Tyrone senior 285-pounder’s lead to 5-3. Carroll, who picked up his first varsity win, chose neutral to begin the third period and neither wrestler was able to score in the third stanza.
At 103, Ronnie Garbinsky (13-1) received a win by forfeit, and A.J. Schopp followed with Tyrone’s third straight win by majoring Ronnie Grove 11-1. Schopp (15-1) used three takedowns for a 6-2 lead after two periods over Grove (11-7), then added a reversal and two sets of nearfall points in the third.
At 125, Robbie Sellers avenged a loss at the Zeigler Tournament to Donnie Rosensteel by scraping for a takedown in overtime for a 10-8 triumph. Sellers carried 4-3 and 7-5 leads after the first two periods. Rosensteel (6-9) escaped and took Sellers down, to take an 8-7 lead, but Sellers (4-8) escaped to take the match into overtime, then garnered the takedown to wrap it up.
Cody Weaver and Anthony Romano both weighed in at 130, with Weaver (8-5) taking a Mount Union forfeit and Romano (12-5) moving up to 135, where he was unable to counter the extra weight in an 11-3 major decision for the Trojan’s Devon Smith (11-4).
Tyrone final win came with some extra-curricular affairs at the end of the 152 match. In another of the five rematches from the Zeigler Tournament, Jeremy Barlett used a second period escape and takedowns in both of the last two periods for a 5-2 win over Keith Hoffmaster. At the very end of the match, Hoffmaster (9-6) purposely head-butted Barlett, drawing a one team point penalty from referee Dick Wood. Hoffmaster continued his belligerent attitude with Wood and then was called for a flagrant misconduct penalty, costing Mount Union three more team points and suspending the Mount Union sophomore from his team’s next match. Hoffmaster had edged Barlett 3-2 at the Zeigler.
The dual began at 160 with undefeated Mount Union senior Dustin Drake (16-0) repeating a pin over Cody Smith (1-7) in 3:41. Smith lasted two minutes to the second longer than he did before getting decked by Drake at the tournament. At 171, Shayne Tate got one point closer to Trojan junior Zach Hicks. After falling 5-3, Tate (10-4) exchanged two escapes for an escape and takedown to drop a 3-2 match to Hicks (14-3).
Eric Hoffmaster (11-4) pinned Dustin Weaver (0-10) in 3:28, at 189, and Jamal Fortson (15-3) decked Wayne Dembitsky (0-10) in 1:51 at 215.
Chase Weaver (5-5) fell by a10-1 major decision to Dalton Smith (14-3) at 119. James Weston (4-8) was pinned, at 140, by the first half of the Ryan twins-Kevin (15-1) in 0:55, and brother Keith (15-1) picked up a forfeit at 145.
Tyrone also lost the junior high meet falling 45-42 in a close match. The Little Eagles won the final three weight classes with a forfeit, pin and major decision, but gave up a forfeit at 155 and there was no match at 210 that made the difference.
Andrew Warrender (115), Kirby Lawrence (250) and Tyler Osterhout (105) had pins, Caleb Snyder (130), Jeremy Miller (138) and Mark McMonigal (100) won by major decisions, and Kaden Hunter (75) and Colton Weaver (95) won by forfeit.
