Eleanor K. Barker, 89, of Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of the Williamsburg area, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at the home, after a lengthy illness.
She was born August 9, 1918 in Stroudsburg, a daughter of the late Ernest and Marion Maude (Booth) Hess. She married Gerald L. “Jerry” Barker on August 12, 1941 in Stroudsburg.
Surviving are her husband; three daughters: Nancy E. Grove (husband, Harold) of Martinsburg, Patricia J. Thayer (husband, Fred) of Williamsport, and Evelyn C. Bookhammer (husband, Curtis) of rural Alexandria, PA; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant brother. Ernest Hess Jr.
Mrs. Barker retired as a music and art teacher at Williamsburg High School.
Previously she taught music in Armagh and Seward, PA. She also assisted her husband and family in establishing the JB Tree Farm, rural Alexandria.
She was a 1935 graduate of Johnstown High School and a 1939 graduate of Indiana State Teachers College, Indiana, PA.
Mrs. Barker was an active member of the Presbyterian Church, Alexandria, and a former member of the First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg, where she served as church organist for many years.
She was a former member of the Williamsburg Civic Club and the Williamsburg Business and Professional Women’s Club. She also founded and directed the singing group, “The Harmonettes”.
She enjoyed playing and teaching the piano and pipe organ. Her hobbies included painting, sewing, baking, and raising flowers.
A public memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, December 23, at Alexandria Presbyterian Church on the corner of Hartslog St. & Shelton Ave. by Pastor Earnest C. Walls and Pastor Gerald W. McCuller Jr. Inurnment will be made at Presbyterian Cemetery, Williamsburg. The family requests no flowers or memorial gifts. Arrangements are by the Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Williamsburg.
