St. Matthew students had an extra week of summer vacation when the school’s opening was pushed back due to construction. But it is back to the books today as the new St. Matthew School building opens its doors for the first time. “Tea with the Teacher” was held yesterday at Harkins Hall, providing an opportunity for teachers, students, parents and guardians to share sweet tea, blueberry muffins and receive a gift from their new principal, Nancy A. Francisco. The gift was a “welcome to school” bag filled with a box of crayons and a St. Matthew medal, along with a passage from the Bible. Students also received mints, candy kisses and a balloon with their name on it. An open house is scheduled for this Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the school. (The Daily Herald/Amanda Golden)
