Merrill L. Barto

Merrill L. Barto, 78, Gatesburg, died Aug. 26 at his home.
He was born March 6, 1929, in Marengo, the son of Gilbert and Elsie (Wrye) Barto.
On June 16, 1953, he was married to Freda M. Burns at the Ross United Methodist Church by Rev. Ash. They were married for 54 years.
Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Vicki L. Gray and her husband, Tim, of Gatesburg; a son, Aaron L. Barto of Stormstown; two grandsons, Jacob and Matthew Barto and a granddaughter, Morgan Gray; two brothers, Eddie Barto of Gatesburg and Donald Barto of Quakertown; and four sisters, Gail Dugan of State College, A. Vivian Swortwood of Lamar, Joyce Fink of Sinking Valley and Leona Smith of Marengo.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Barto was a graduate of the State College High School class of 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1953 as a radar operator during the Korean Conflict.
After service, he worked at Penn State University in the grounds department and later in the printing department, retiring in 1987, having worked for the university for 39 1/2 years.
He was a member of the Ross United Methodist Church. He also belonged to the IOOF of Stormstown, the National Rifle Association and was a lifetime member of both the Pine Grove VFW and the Port Matilda American Legion.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Gatesburg Lutheran Church, 1924 Gatesburg Road, will Rev. Susan Williamson officiating.
Interment will follow at the Gatesburg Cemetery.
Friends will be received on Tuesday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. a the Bruce Cox Funeral Home, Warriors Mark.
