Tyrone Legion clinches fifth seed for playoffs

Dick’s Pharmacy scored the first run against Tyrone Legion on Monday evening at Geesey Park, but the Legion club came back to jump into a 9-1 lead, then held on to take a 9-8 decision that clinched the fifth seed for the upcoming George B. Kelley Federation playoffs.
Tom Sims drove in a pair of runs, winning pitcher Randy Hoover collected two hits, Matt Brooks added two base hits, including a double, and Aaron Cunningham belted his second triple in two days to lead Tyrone Legion. Cunningham was a home run short of hitting for the cycle in Sunday’s game against Martin Oil.Cunningham scored on an RBI groundout by Jamie Levinson.
Tyrone Legion swiftly overcame the early Dick’s Pharmacy advantage with a three spot in the top of the second inning, two in the third, and one more in the fourth, before Dick’s started a comeback that was just a little too late.
Tyrone Legion added what would prove to be three very valuable insurance tallies in the fifth, before Dick’s Pharmacy scored once in the bottom of the fifth, and five more in the home half of the sixth. After holding Tyrone Legion scoreless in their half of the seventh, Dick’s Pharmacy closed to within one run, 9-8, before Tyrone Legion’s Hoover retired the side to earn the victory.
A big part of the win was the errorless defense for Tyrone Legion, while Dick’s Pharmacy, despite outhitting Tyrone Legion 10-7, committed six errors in the field.
Hoover struck out three and walked three in picking up the win with five solid innings in relief of Brooks, who walked one and struck out one.
Tyler McCaulley led Dick’s Pharmacy with a perfect three-for-three day at the plate with two RBI. Dave Walter and Kevin Henry had doubles for Dick’s and Quirin ripped a triple. Josh Ross had two hits and an RBI.
Walter took the loss for Dick’s Pharmacy, walking three and striking out four.
With the win, Tyrone Legion (10-12) clinches the fifth seed for the playoffs, and will begin the best-of-three first round series against fourth seed Martin Oil, on Friday night at Vets Field.
