Joshua House Seventh Annual Hoopsfest scheduled for Saturday

On Saturday, July 21, the best three-on-three basketball teams in Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland will assemble in Tyrone for a tournament of ages at Joshua House’s Seventh Annual Hoopsfest.
Basketball games will be played on 10th Street and Logan Avenue, with activities in the Tyrone Armory as well. The M & T parking lot will also be used for other activities.
Divisions will include: grades 4-5 mixed; grades 6-7 mixed; grades 8-9 boys and girls and grades 10-12 boys and girls.
Open divisions will include: women’s, recreational, competitive, all star and 60 and over.
New this year, Most Outstanding Player awards will be given in each division as well as trophies to winning teams.
The day’s events will feature prizes for all divisions, a dunk contest, three point contest and hot spots.
Registration fee is $50 before July 20 and $60 on the day of the event.
Registration is from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. Games start at 10 a.m. There will be a break at lunch. During that time, the three-point contest, dunk contest and the $500 shot are scheduled to take place.
Playoffs/championship games will be held between 3 to 4 p.m.
“It’s going to be a tremendous fundraiser for Joshua House. It will be the biggest of the year,” said Jim Kilmartin, director of Joshua House.
Kilmartin said he is expecting over 500 people downtown as either participants or spectators for the tournament.
“It will be a great day for the whole family. It’s going to be a big day,” he added.
Kilmartin said over 50 teams participated last year, and he’s hoping for more than that this year.
G & R Excavating is a corporate sponsor this year, along with many other sponsors from the community.
Organizers of the event would appreciate donations of soda and Gatorade. Those who would like to donate those items may drop them off at Joshua House throughout the day sometime this week or at the back door.
On Saturday, there will also be street and food vendors, an old fashioned ice cream truck, family entertainment and giveaways of gift certificates and pizzas.
To add to the day’s activities, the Tyrone Armory is scheduled to set up a rock climbing wall for all ages to enjoy. The Armory is scheduled to also set up an air-conditioned video trailer that will have XBox and PlayStations for use. The Armory will have giveaways like key chains, water bottles and shirts as well, and there will be a special Armory truck on display.
