Tyrone girls have season highs in runs and hits

The Tyrone girls softball team played probably their best game of the year against Huntingdon on Friday, at the Hilltop diamond in the Harry K. Sickler Athletic Complex. The two teams played even softball for all but the top of the sixth inning, when the Lady Bearcats scored four times for a 9-6 win.
“This was the best we have played all year,” said Tyrone softball coach Lois Loncher. “It is the most runs and hits that we have had in a game. Defensively our bunt coverage was good. We put down several bunts to move runners into scoring position and then got hits to bring them in.”
Tyrone had six runs and 10 hits, both season highs, led by Ashley Pennabaker and Lindsay Christine who each banged out three hits for the Lady Eagles, who never gave in, even coming back in the bottom of the seventh to score a pair of runs that sliced the Huntingdon girls advantage to 9-6, but just couldn’t manage to get any closer.
Tyrone pitcher Brooke Garbinsky limited Huntingdon (3-12 overall, 1-9 in the division) to six hits, fanned four and walked five. The Lady Bearcats first six batters had one hit each.
Winning pitcher Brittany McNeal had a triple and two RBI, and teammate Ashley Kifer doubled and drove in three runs.
Kifer slammed a two-bagger in the first inning to drive in a pair of runners as the Lady ‘Cats opened a 3-1 lead after one inning.
Tyrone tied the score in the fifth, when Lindsay Christine singled in Kim Cherry. Huntingdon went ahead to stay in the sixth, when McNeal unloaded a two-run triple.
Ashley Pennabaker doubled home one seventh-inning tally and a pair of groundouts, scored the second.
McNeal struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.
Tyrone will travel to Huntingdon for the rematch on Tuesday, with the first pitch set for 4:30 p.m.
