Jack Atlas Kurtz

Jack Atlas Kurtz, 73, of Sinking Valley, RD 3, Altoona, PA died Monday morning April 9, 2007 at his residence with his family by his side.
He was born January 14, 1934 in Spruce Creek, a son of the late Atlas D. (Jack) and Myrtle (Smith) Kurtz.
He was married October 29, 1954 in Tyrone to Loretta Markel.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, a daughter Julie Gummo (Dave) of Tyrone and a son Timothy Kurtz (Becky) of Sweet Valley, PA and grandchildren Heather Kurtz, Jason Kurtz, Nick Holliday, Ashley Gummo, Melissa Kurtz, Adrian, Tylo, Sabryn, Matthew and Gianna Kurtz, three sisters: Patricia Morrison of Cottage, PA, Edna Hefferan of Belleville, PA, Barbara Hughey of South Carolina, and a brother, Kenneth Kurtz of Spruce Creek. There are several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving son Jack Raymond Kurtz, brothers Albert and Ronald and a sister Cathlene.
He served in the Army from 1956 to 1960 and Army Reserve from 1958 to 1960 as an Armor Crewman with rank of Sergeant.
He retired from the Chicago Rivet and Machine Co. in 1999 after 26 years service. He was a member of the Altoona Rifle and Gun Club, Kemmer Stock Mt. Cur Breeders Association of Tennessee and the National Kennel Club of Tennessee. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and trapper. Jack loved the outdoors and spending time with his family, his garden, flowers, and his hunting dogs Kayman and Sandy. His special memories were of hunting with his son Jack Raymond, his grandson Jason and his dog Kayman.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 1 p.m. at the Derman Funeral Home, Inc., Tyrone with Rev. Peggy J. Bonsell officiating . Interment with military honors will follow at Logan Valley Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the funeral home on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the service at 1 p.m.
