Tyrone 7th graders fall in championship game

Tyrone\’s seventh grade basketball team played the Tigers of Hollidaysburg Thursday evening for the championship of the Roosevelt Rough Rider league.
Both teams came out in man defense at the tip off and the Tigers ran out to an early 7-0 lead.
Following a time out, the Eagles settled down and clawed their way back into the game with good defense and offensively attacking the Tigers defense.
Tyrone took control of the defensive boards in the first half and held the Tigers to 15 first half points leading with 19.
Hollidaysburg settled into a 1-3-1 zone defense for the duration of the game, as Tyrone boxed and oned the Tigers talented guard Shannon.
Both teams exchanged baskets, then Hollidaysburg cut the deficit and took the lead 26-27. The game was within a point till the last minute as the Tigers pulled away for the victory 38-29.
“The final score does not indicate what a great game that was played here this evening,” said Coach Stever. “I am so proud of our young men, they played their hearts out this evening and came up on the short end. Hollidaysburg controlled the boards on both ends of the court in the second half , and that was the difference in the outcome.”
Both squads committed less than 10 turnovers in the game.
Steve Franco led the scoring for Tyrone with 12, followed by Richard Crabtree with nine points.
The Eagles shot 5-12 from the line this evening and are 50% for the season (117-233).
The Tyrone seventh graders play Hollidaysburg at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Building II in Altoona.
