Tyrone 7th graders earn berth in league finals

Tyrone\’s seventh grade basketball team traveled to Roosevelt Junior High School on Sunday evening to take on the Keith Rams in the semifinal game of the Rough Rider League.
Both teams matched up in man defense at the start, and the action was slow offensively as both teams seemed to size each other up the entire first half. Keith fell behind 5-1 and slipped into a tight 1-3-1 zone defense and took over the lead at the half 10-13.
Tyrone\’s Eagles came out on fire in the second period as Richard Crabtree hit two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions scoring 10 points for the game, opening up the inside for Steve Franco who penetrated the Keith defense all evening scoring a game-high 15 points.
The Rams would not lay down and answered the call as both teams battled with Tyrone leading 20-19 with 10 minutes remaining. As the action intensified, the Eagles got out on the fast break as Kaleb Chronister laid in a beautiful pass from Franco and then launched up a three that found nothing but net to put the Eagles ahead to stay.
Tyrone shot 15-30 from the line, however, J.D. Dorminy who did all of his scoring from the charity strip went seven of 10 as he, Nick Patton, and the entire Tyrone squad played a gutty defense all evening against the more physical Rams.
Tyrone converted down the stretch from the line and went on to win 40-32.
Tyrone, 16-2 overall, plays Hollidaysburg in the championship game Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m.
