Bellwood-Antis wrestlers stop long losing streak

It had been a long time, exactly nine duals since a Bellwood-Antis win. On Jan. 9, the Blue Devils wrestling team ripped Juniata Valley 51-21 to even their early season record at 2-2. Then the Blue Devils went into a tailspin, nine straight losses dropped the .500 record to an unsightly 2-11. On Tuesday evening, following a long trip to Saxton, Bellwood-Antis won six of nine matches actually wrestled and added three forfeits to strap Tussey Mountain 54-15.
With the dual meet beginning at 285, Cody Smith (4-6) took Derrick Morales down and worked for the first of three first-period pins for Bellwood-Antis, in 1:43.
Troy Weyant (103) and Donnie Partner (119) each received forfeits from Tussey Mountain, which with a new coach is now going through some of the problems with numbers that the Blue Devils had to struggle with just a couple years ago.
Weyant (17-9) moved past his coach Ron Wilson into second place on the Bellwood-Antis freshmen list, trailing only Tracey Karlie (1980-81) and Tony Montanaro (190-91) with 20 wins as ninth graders. Wilson won 90 matches over his final three years to finish two wins behind Karley with 106. Partner improves to 4-18.
Neil Stevenson got Tussey on the scoreboard, leading 10-2 when he pinned Shane Noye (7-15) in 5:01 at 125.
At 130, Timmy Noye (7-14) registered a takedown and quickly turned Jared Hess for the fall in 0:44 to push the B-A lead to 24-6. Cody Fink (6-18) and Dustin Pruznak (4-13) picked up forfeits at the next two weight classes to build the Blue Devils’ advantage to 36-6.
Ricky Shawley, who had edged Ian Mitchell just 2-0 in the championship finals at the Tri-County Tournament in December, yielded a penalty point and an escape, but added some offense this time. Shawley (25-1) reversed Mitchell after starting on the bottom to begin the second period at 145, then added a three-point nearfall in the middle stanza and a pair of takedowns in the third period for a solid 9-2 win.
At 152, Ronnie Wilson (14-8) shut out Zane Bussard 7-0 on two takedowns and three first-period back points. Wilson pinned Bussard in 1:04 in the Tri-County semifinals.
Kristopher Musselman stopped the B-A momentum at 160, with an 8-4 triumph over B-A senior Garett Wyland (6-15). Musselman trailed 4-0 in the middle of the second period before scoring eight unanswered points for the win, with a third-period takedown and nearfall cementing the win. Clay Harshberger followed with a fall over Troy Byers (4-19) in 1:34, while leading 8-0 on a takedown and total of six back points. Harshberger also pinned Byers at the Tri-County in 2:16 to eliminate Byers from the tournament.
That would be all for the Titans. Bellwood-Antis got pins at 189, and 215, to close out the dual.
At 189, B-A sophomore Jimmy Watters (10-14) recorded the quickest fall of the evening, decking Sean Foster in just 0:31, for his seventh pin of the year. Then, it took Caleb Stevens nearly the entire match at 215, before he got Gregory Strauss where he wanted him. Strauss opened up leads of 4-1 and 8-3 after the first two periods, before the two wrestlers got going in the third period to record four more takedowns, two reversals, two escapes and a nearfall, before Stevens (6-13) closed the deficit to 16-11 and then put Strauss’ shoulders to the mat for the fall with just six seconds left in the match.
“We desperately needed a win,” explained Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. “The kids were aggressive, overall they wrestled well. There are still a few things we saw that we need to work on. But we picked up a couple big wins tonight. Now is the time of year when they need to start winning..”
Junior High
The junior high meet went back and forth as each team put a number of wins together, with Bellwood-Antis getting the longer streak and the 60-34 win.
After Gerald Price (210) and Travis Lyons (250) both received forfeits, Tussey Mountain ran off the next five wins to jump out to a 25-12 lead. Adam Davinsizer (100), Danny Noye (105) and Lincoln Stehley (110) started the Blue Devils run with pins and the B-A juniors limited Tussey to just two wins in the last 11 weight classes.
Also picking up pins for Bellwood-Antis were Christian Solecki (130), Jordan Simmers (138), and Travis Taylor (145). Buddy Shaw (122) and Trey Campbell (165) won decisions and Mark McCracken (185) won by forfeit.
The Bellwood-Antis/Spring Cove junior high match will be wrestled next Tuesday at 1:30 to allow the B-A middle school students to watch the match.
