Record-setting effort by Nulton leads Tyrone in swim opener

The Tyrone swim teams opened their season with the first of five straight meets at home with a double victory. The Tyrone boys, led by a school record performance by Ethan Nulton smashed Central 93-60, while the Lady Eagles opened their season by squeaking past the Central girls 78-72.
Nulton set a new Tyrone Area record with his 200 freestyle time of 1:56.43, breaking the old mark of 1:57.69, that had been held by his older brother Eric Nulton, by more than a full second.
Nulton also won the 100 butterfly and swam the anchor leg on the Eagles’ winning 200 freestyle relay. Philip Kreckel added wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle races and had the third leg of the 200 free relay. Dustin Elder garnered a win in the 500 freestyle and was the second man in the 200 free, following Chris Closson, who also was a member of the Golden Eagles winning 200 medley relay along with Evan Lewis, Dudley McNitt and Allen Hosko. Lewis won the 100 backstroke.
Brittney Day and Salena Bradigan each won two individual events and each was a member of the winning 200 medley relay for the Lady Eagles, who needed every point they got to get the victory over the Lady Dragons.
Day won the 50 and 100 freestyle races and anchored both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, while Bradigan won the 200 IM and 100 butterfly along with the 200 free relay.
Kelly Pearson won the 100 backstroke, was second in the 200 free and was a part of both the 200 medley and 200 free relays.
The 200 medley relay team consisted of Pearson, Kassie Markel, Bradigan and day, and the 200 free relay consisted of Abby Cowfer, Chynna Beisel, Pearson and Day.
Freshman Beisel got off to a good start with seconds in the 200 IM, 500 freestyle and 400 free relay in addition to the 200 free relay win.
The Richland meet which was originially scheduled for Dec. 11, has been moved back one week to Dec. 18. Tyrone’s next swim meet will be at home against Cambria Heights on Wednesday, Dec. 13, beginning at 6 p.m.
