Lewistown girls continue hex on Tyrone Lady Eagles

The girls on the Lewistown Lady Panther basketball teams have come and gone since the last time the Tyrone girls have defeated them. Not since 1994, going back 12 straight seasons, have the Tyrone girls emerged victorious over Lewistown.
On Monday night, the Lady Eagles battled the Lewistown girls in the first and fourth quarters, actually outscoring them 35-29 over those two periods. The problem was the middle two stanzas however.
With scoring advantages of 17-4 and 18-9, the Lady Panthers (5-0) continued the trend carrying the game 64-47 to record their fifth straight triumph of the 2006 season.
With a new coach and very little experience, the Lady Eagles held the upper hand in the first quarter, pulling out to a 19-11 advantage, but then allowed Lewistown to set the tempo for the following two quarters.
“We came out strong in the first quarter, but then we got away from our game plan,” said first year coach Lucas Rhoades. Our inexperience really showed.”
Tyrone was led by Liz Tepsic, their one girl who does have some experience. Tepsic poured in a team-high 20 points for the Lady Eagles and had the kind of complete game the Tyrone girls need to provide a spark for the rest of the season. Kayla Corle added 17 points for Tyrone.
Despite trailing 46-32 after three quarters, the Lady Eagles never gave up, coming back to mix it up with the Lewistown girls in the final stanza, but the lead and the experience of the Lady Panthers were too much to pull off a comeback.
“I think Liz played a really complete game for us, Said Rhoades. “If she can do that and the other girls can learn on the run as they get more game experience, we will win the close ones. We played right to the very end. This will be a trademark for this team, we will play hard the entire game.”
Lewistown was led by Hannah Deedy with 15 points, including three treys, Kayla Espigh with 13 and Natasha Pecht with an even dozen.
Lewistown also won the junior varsity ballgame by a 42-30 score
Tyrone (2-3) will host Hollidaysburg on Thursday in the Tyrone Area High School gym. The junior varsity contest will start at 6 p.m.
