Details announced for CPHS Pet Fair

Pet owners from across the region are being invited to take part in this year’s “Pet Fair” as hosted by the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society. The event takes place on Sunday, September 17 at Legion Park in Hollidaysburg from noon to 3 p.m.
The fair will feature entertainment, information, food and music. Fair organizers say the event will be “fun for the entire family” especially with the addition this year of a special “jump room” for the kids (courtesy of Always a Party rentals). The fair will also include a pet show, silly pet trick competition, breed rescue information booths, an “Ask the Vet” area (staffed by Jessica Stanik, DVM, Hollidaysburg Animal Clinic), A special appearance by “Mrs. Pennsylvania,” Joyelle Scavone, pet sitting service providers, pet supply retailers, other area humane agencies and shelters, a state dog warden, a special bake sale of homemade goods, clowns “Jeszme” and “Sparky,” a special appearance by the Sheetz “Hummer,” valuable door prizes and a 50/50.
Something new will be offered this year at the food concession. Special barbecue dinners will be offered by the Phoenix Restaurant.
“We’re really excited about hosting the Phoenix at the event,” said CPHS Director of Fundraising/Public Relations Dave Hopkins. “The folks at the Phoenix make unbelievable barbecue and they’ll be serving it on site hot and fresh.”
The dinners will consist of a large “Memphis pulled pork” sandwich, creamy coleslaw and “zesty” beans (both homemade by the Phoenix). They can be eaten at the fair or picked up for take-out. The cost is $7 and advance tickets are recommended. Phoenix dinner tickets can be purchased at the restaurant (300 4th Ave., Altoona), Chris’ Hallmark (Pleasant Valley Shopping Center), Thompson Pharmacy (Chestnut Ave. , Altoona), Barroner’s Farm Market (Hollidaysburg), the CPHS shelter (1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd., Altoona), CPHS Thrift Shop (220 E. Walton Ave., Altoona) and V.I.P. Pets & Aquarium (Logan Blvd. at 6th Ave.).
Hot dogs and soft drinks will be offered for sale as well by CPHS staff.
Also, music will be provided by Baby Boomers D.J. service.
Of special interest again this year will be the sale of the very popular “CPHS Picture Perfect Pet” calendars featuring area pets. The full-color calendars sell for $7 each ($5 to CPHS members).
Fairgoers are encouraged to bring their pets. However, dogs must be on leashes or restrained in a comfortable fashion, and cats should be in appropriate carriers. All animals are invited to enter the “Pet Show” competition, which will feature prize ribbons awarded in numerous categories. Entry forms are found in the Pet Fair pamphlets found at local veterinary offices, some area retailers and the CPHS shelter and Thrift Shop. Registration for the pet show begins at 11:30 a.m.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the homeless animals at the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society shelter located at 1837 E. Pleasant Valley Blvd. in Altoona.
The event will be held rain or shine, according to CPHS officials. For more information, call 942-5402 or 942-2477. Please note: the shelter will be closed to the public on the day of the event so employees may attend.
