Senior community centers extend hours to offer heat relief

In response to forecasts of extremely hot and humid weather for Tuesday and Wednesday, Blair Senior Services, Inc. will be offering extended hours at several Senior Community Centers throughout Blair County.
The Altoona Senior Community Center, located at 1320 Twelfth Avenue in Altoona, will be open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, August 1 and 2.
The Tyrone Senior Community Center, 505 West Third Street, will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 1 and from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 2.
Senior Community Centers in Bellwood, Duncansville, Martinsburg, Roaring Spring and Williamsburg will be open during their regular hours of 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
All older adults, sixty and over are invited to come to a Senior Community Center to escape the heat, watch television, play games or just relax.
Because older people are more at risk for heat related illnesses, Blair Senior Services asks everyone to check on older relatives and friends during periods of extreme hot weather, and reminds people to take the necessary precautions to remain healthy and safe. The Pennsylvania Department of Health suggests drinking plenty of non-alcoholic liquids such as water – even if not thirsty; dressing appropriately in light-colored, loose-fitting clothing; staying out of the sun during the hottest part of the day and postponing strenuous activity and work until later in the day when the temperature drops.
If you or an older adult that you know needs assistance during this hot weather emergency, call Blair Senior Services at 946-1235. For emergency situations between the hours of 4 p.m. and 8 a.m., call the Agency’s Protective Services number at 949-4850.
