Pfahler and Riley star in Bellwood-Antis softball senior night victory

The Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devil softball team spilt a completion of one game and a full game against West Branch, losing 6-4 and winning 5-3, but the biggest story was the culmination of two careers in Bellwood’s 5-3 win.
Christine Pfahler and Dani Riley, the lone seniors on Bellwood-Antis’ young squad, each had RBI doubles during a 5-3 win in their last home game as Lady Blue Devils.
“Out of all the kids that started (in their class) and quit, because the program has been in a dip, these were the only two that had the courage to stick with it,” Bellwood-Antis Manager Alex Sitman said. “They don’t whine, they come to practice to practice, and they came to win this game, and they had the game-opening and game-breaking hits today.”
It was Pfahler who made it three straight hits to begin the bottom of the first inning with a two-run double to the fence following singles by Pam Weyant and Tory Baldauf.
West Branch clawed to within one when Leah Lawrence scored on a Colette Sample sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth inning.
The Lady Blue Devils responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning fueled by singles from Baldauf and Tamara Askey. Riley added an important insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a towering double to deep left field that scored Jenna Brown, who had reached on a walk.
The late offensive surge allowed Bellwood-Antis pitcher Emily Derr some breathing room during a shaky seventh inning in which she allowed two runs to score and the tying run to come to the plate. Derr regained her composure, fielded Shannon Croyle’s grounder back to the mound, and threw her out for the complete game victory.
Derr, who was working her 10th inning of the day after pitching the final three frames of the completed game, pitched what may have been her best game of the season, finally conquering control issues that have plagued the Lady Blue Devils for most of the season.
West Branch drew only two walks and one batter was hit by a pitch. Two of the three runners that reached as a result of the free passes scored.
“When Emily gets her mind set, she’s a great pitcher,” Sitman said. “The big thing we have been pushing on her is not to take any innings off; come after them every pitch. A lot of freshmen would have buckled, but she stayed tough on them.”
In the first game, a completion of a 3-3 tie started at West Branch on April 13th, Lawrence singled in Rachelle Turner to give West Branch a 4-3 lead before Bellwood-Antis answered in the top of the fifth inning when Riley bunted Askey home to tie the game.
With two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Jess Sabol hit a deep line drive to center field, but Weyant’s throw had her nailed at second base. However, the ball got away and Lawrence took advantage by lacing West Branch’s fifth double of the game to break the tie. Ryenne Moslak capped the scoring with an RBI single to score Lawrence.
Moslak finished the job on the mound, where she recorded 13 strikeouts during the 6-4 complete game victory.
Baldauf went six for seven in the two games, scored three runs, collected an RBI, stole a base and was also hit by a pitch.
The Lady Blue Devils finish their season with three straight road games, the first being Thursday at Williamsburg. In their previous encounter this season, Bellwood-Antis was victorious 16-8. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
