East End Pizza is celebrating 50 years of service in the Tyrone community this weekend.
There are many events planned during this special celebration, which began yesterday, when Mayor Jim Kilmartin got things started by reading a proclamation in honor of East End’s 50 years in the community.
The special events will continue today and tomorrow. A recent press release said there will be some exciting surprises in store for the 50th anniversary celebration, not to mention an old fashioned block party, live entertainment, special guests and a lot of gift giveaways.
Also, during the festivities, the pizza shop will host extended hours and everyone is invited to stop in, join the fun and grab a bite to eat.
East End Pizza is a family-owned business, operated by matriarch Louise Sweitzer and her children. The business was started between 1955 and 1956 when Louise’s husband, Howard “Howd” Sweitzer and her brother, John Franchio teamed up. Shortly after East End opened in Tyrone, Sweitzer’s brother started a separate East End shop in Huntingdon while “Howd” continued the business in Tyrone, although the two businesses were not connected.
The shop’s regular hours are Monday through Friday 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4 to 9 p.m. It is also open Saturdays from 4 to 9 p.m. and is closed Sundays and holidays.
Yesterday, Mayor Jim Kilmartin read a proclamation to kick off this weekend’s celebration.
The proclamation read, “On behalf of the Borough of Tyrone hereby proudly extends formal congratulations to East End Pizza and Louise Sweitzer for 50 years of business and service in the Tyrone community. Whereas: East End Pizza, Louise Sweitzer and family have provided a valuable establishment for the Tyrone Community family through perseverance and commitment; and Whereas: We express our gratitude, appreciation and your commitment to this community; and Whereas: We extend wishes, prayers and blessings for the East End Pizza shop family to continue to be a thriving business and family for many years to come. Now, Therefore: I, James R. Kilmartin, Mayor and President of Borough Council of the Borough of Tyrone, Pa., by the power vested in me, do hereby proclaim that Thursday, May 25, 2006, shall be a day filled with wonderful memories that make you smile and warm your hearts for the moment and for the days to come. And, I further proclaim, in my official capacity as Mayor, that all citizens of the Borough of Tyrone take due notice of this joyous occasion.”
The public is invited to stop by East End and help celebrate this special milestone.
