Lady Eagles fall to unbeaten Mounties

The Lady Eagles managed to overcome a few minor injuries and the day’s bitter cold wind and impending showers, but they could not rise above the powerful offensive game delivered by Philipsburg-Osceola girls on Tuesday in a 5-1 loss that brings Tyrone’s season record to 0-4.
Similar to their past several games, the first innings were quiet for both teams. DP Rachelle Yeager and center fielder Devon Burnsworth of the Lady Mounties each scored in a run in the second inning, batted in by catcher Abby Peangatelli and short stop Trisha Hoover.
Tyrone managed to hold the score at 2-0 until the top of the seventh inning when runs by second baseman Dani Demchak, third baseman Makenzie Gonder and first baseman Alyssa English brought the score to 5-0.
Spectators, coaches and players alike believed that another disappointing shutout was on the way. However, having played a strong defensive game for five innings, the Lady Eagles turned around with a run by pitcher Stefani Bryan who had two hits in the contest to lead the Lady Eagles, along with several strong hits by catcher Kim Cherry and second baseman Brooke Garbinski brought the final score to 5-1.
Pitcher Stefani managed no strikeouts whole PO’s Brittany Murphy struck out 11 out of 28 at-bats for Tyrone. The team seemed energetic about the final innings which prompted the coaches to comment on their efforts both in recent practices and on the field.
“They (P-O) are on the edge (of being great.) We did some good things. We missed some coverages we should have had. Philipsburg’s a good team. Basically we held them 2-0 through the sixth, they put some hits together in the seventh and scored, but we played them even up for six innings. They’re right on the edge. A lot of it is just getting comfortable. Lindsay now is back at first, getting a few games under her belt after she was injured. {Steph} had a very nice game and kept them off balance until the end.”
Rachelle Yarger, had three hits, and Abersold, Alyssa English, Bethany Wilson and Risha Hoover each had two hits for the Lady Mounties, who improve to 3-0. Brittany Murphy struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter to pick up the win.
The Lady Eagles compete again on Friday at Bishop Guilfoyle at Garfield Field in Altoona. The first pitch is set for 4 P.M.
