Olivet Baptist Church lends a helping hand to area moms

On Thursday, March 23 at 6:30 p.m. a clothing giveaway/exchange, for widows and single moms, will be held at Olivet Baptist Church in Bellwood.
Individuals are invited to bring clothing to exchange with others. However, it is not necessary to bring clothes in order to participate.
According to Rick Beatty, Pastor of Evangelism at the church, the clothing that will be available is mostly children’s sizes but there may be some adult sizes also.
The clothing exchange is geared toward children because they grow quickly and the clothes they outgrow are often barely used.
This clothing exchange provides moms with a chance to bring in the clothes their children have outgrown and exchange them for clothing brought in by other moms in the area.
There will also be diapers, laundry detergent, baby wipes and more available at the church.
Also, volunteers from the church will provide free oil changes for single moms and widows in the area, on April 8. This is the fourth year for this service, which is provided twice a year.
According to Beatty, interested individuals should call the church at 742-8581 and ask for Rick by April 5 to make an appointment. Callers will need to know the year, make and model of their car. Someone will then return their call with details and a scheduled time for the oil change.
Once an appointment is made, volunteers from the church will pick up the car at the scheduled time on April 8 and take it to the Martin Oil garage, which has been donated for the church to use.
After changing the car’s oil, it will also be washed, vacuumed and have the windows cleaned. Then, the car will be returned to its owner. The whole process is completed within a few hours.
About 30 volunteers help out with this project and last year, Beatty said they were able to work on 24 cars. This year volunteers are hoping to schedule 40 cars.
Beatty said the church is very grateful to the volunteers and to Martin Oil for donating the space, which makes the free oil changes possible.
The clothing giveaway/exchange and free oil change is a part of the church’s efforts to reach out to single moms in the area. Beatty said the church wants help area women who are taking on the task of raising children alone.
“There are a lot of single moms in the area,” said Beatty.
He added, it is a tough job when there are two parents and two incomes in the home, yet single parents are presented with the same challenges and must face them, often without the help and support of others. Olivet Baptist is working to change that for area parents.
“We’re trying to help fill in the gaps,” Beatty explained, saying volunteers also help with minor plumbing, yard work and small fix-it projects around the home, among other things.
Through several efforts, such as the clothing giveaway/exchange and a free oil change, the church is trying to connect more with the community.
