Tyrone boys swim team upsets Tigers

The Tyrone Area swim teams celebrated Senior Night on Wednesday evening at the Tyrone Area High School pool. The Tyrone boys upset a talented Hollidaysburg team (9-4) by a single point 85-84, with a total team effort, while the once-beaten Hollidaysburg Lady Tigers trounced the Tyrone girls 120-44.
A second place finish in the final scored event, the 400 freestyle relay blunted the Hollidaysburg effort to pull the match out. Although outscoring the Eagles 10-4 in that relay, the four points for second place was just enough to secure the team victory for the Eagle men, who finish out the regular season with a 9-6 record.
Dustin Elder was victorious in the 200 free, Chris Bradigan won the 50 free, and Ethan Nulton won the 100 backstroke for the only individual Tyrone wins. Victories in both the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays provided valuable points for the Eagles as well. Nulton, Zac Yeaton, Matt Elder and Chris Bradigan swam the 200 medley and Philip Kreckle, Dustin Elder, Nulton and Bradigan added the 200 freestyle relay win.
Kreckle also was second in both the 50 free and 100 free, Nulton was second in the 200 IM, Yeaton was second in the 100 breaststroke, and Matt Grimm finished second in the 100 butterfly in addition to the 400 relay as Tyrone placed two swimmers in the top three of six separate events.
“I was really proud of the boys last night,” said Tyrone swim coach Todd Cammarata. “The seniors went out with a big upset win, we didn’t expect to beat Hollidaysburg. We had some great swims and pulled out a one-point meet. That’s great because earlier in the season, we lost a couple of meets we shouldn’t have lost when we were down a few swimmers. Last night gave us a lift to help make up for that.”
Brittany Day has the only win for the Lady Eagles on the girls side, winning the 50 freestyle. The Tyrone girls, who have had trouble all season with depth, got seconds from Day in the 100 freestyle, Leah Cherry in the 500 freestyle and the 400 free relay team of Cherry, Zoe Yeaton, Kelly Pearson and Paige Black.
Plagued by lack of numbers for several seasons, the Lady Eagles started to turn that corner this season, but still had only nine girls to work with,
“The girls team is definitaely on the way back up,” stated Cammarata. “You can’t take away what several of the girls have done individually. We had some great swims on the girls side, we just have a small team and have been beaten by numbers a lot this year. You can’t overshadow what a great job they have done this year because of small numbers.”
Honored on Senior Night for their final home appearance were Leah Cherry, Paige Black, Zoe Yeaton, Amy Liu, Chris Bradigan, Matt Elder, Matt Grimm and Zac Yeaston, who have formed a nucleus for the Eagles swim teams and will be hard to replace in the future.
