Lady Blue Devils fail to sustain strong start in loss to BG

For half of the first quarter, the Bellwood-Antis Lady Blue Devils gave their fans a glimpse of what they had hoped would happen by the time the calendar read 2006. Liz Erickson and Lauren Carter were dominating in the paint, Victoria Lombardo and Shalee Hunter were contributing points as well, and the guards were safely bringing the ball down the court on each possession against a team that came in 16-6.
The Lady Blue Devils led Bishop Guilfoyle 11-4 after shutting the Lady Marauders out for almost four minutes to begin the game. Erickson had already posted six points, and Carter was pulling down almost every rebound.
However, with less than three minutes to go in the opening quarter, the great start was shattered in less than 30 seconds.
Tera Geishauser, who led all scorers with 17 points, started the Bishop Guilfoyle charge with a 3-pointer. The Lady Marauders immediately went into a full court press that forced two consecutive quick turnovers that resulted in easy layups and a tied game with 2:11 left in the quarter.
From there, the game became a downhill spiral for Bellwood-Antis. Bishop Guilfoyle added eight more consecutive points to cap off a 15-0 run before Erickson made a layup to cut the Lady Marauders\’ lead to 20-13.
“Press wise, they are aggressive, and that\’s something that makes it tough to prepare for in practice, because they have so many people that are quick and aggressive like that, and that 3-pointer and those two turnovers were big,” Bellwood-Antis Head Coach Nick Lovrich said.
Another Erickson layup minutes later cut the lead to six, but Geishauser hit her second 3-pointer of the night to put Bellwood-Antis down 26-17.
To make matters worse for the Lady Blue Devils, Erickson was forced to leave the game moments later due to an injury.
“Liz has really been stepping up the last couple games for us, and she is looking to be more aggressive offensively,” Lovrich said. “Once she went down that kind of took our spirits out a little bit.”
Without Erickson on the floor, Bishop Guilfoyle made another run, this time 11-4, to close out the first half leading 37-22.
Erickson returned for the second half, but her two missed free throws to begin the third quarter were an omen for things to come. The Lady Blue Devils made only four baskets in the half and missed all five of their free throws.
Meanwhile, Bishop Guilfoyle found their groove offensively. Twelve Lady Marauders scored at least two points while Courtney Carroll, who scored 14 points and Mara Wertz, who added 10, joined Geishauser in double digits.
With their reserves playing as inspired as their starters had, Bishop Guilfoyle ended the game on a 15-2 run that gave them a 72-30 victory.
“I don\’t think we let up, but I think we got into their game, which is an up-tempo game, and we\’d rather play a little slower so we can work our half court sets,” Lovrich said. “Once they turned the pace up for us, that made us a little tired, and we played into their hands with the turnovers.”
The Lady Blue Devils will conclude their season Tuesday when they host Bald Eagle Area. The junior varsity game will begin at 6 p.m.
Before the game seniors Carter, Jamie Smith, Jessica Parson and Danielle Riley will be honored.
