Tyrone junior high boys start season with victories over Little Blue Devils

Coming off a successful first season at the helm of the Tyrone Junior High basketball program in 2004-2005 where the 9th graders compiled a record of 20-6 and the 8th graders 23-3, coaches Mark Mitchell (ninth) and Darrin Elvey (eighth) watched their teams get off to a good start yesterday by defeating the Blue Devils at the Bellwood gym.
In the ninth grade game, Tyrone’s overall strength and balance prevailed over the Blue Devils. Starting off with the first quarter where six Golden Eagles got a score, Tyrone led 11-3. They increased their lead to 25-9 by halftime with a 14-6 second quarter effort led by Nate Dane’s 7 points. The Eagles’ stingy defense held Bellwood without a field goal until the 3:45 mark of the second quarter. Tyrone increased their lead to 38-12 after three quarters, and coasted to a 46-18 win.
Nathan Dane and Ben Ingle led the Eagles with 11 and nine points, respectively, with seven added by both Kyle Updyke and John Shaffer. The Golden Eagles will play next on Friday, December 9, at Bald Eagle Area.
Nick DeGol led Bellwood-Antis with five points. The Blue Devils next game will be Wednesday, Dec. 7 at home against Chestnut Ridge.
