Carter outscores Moshannon Valley as Lady Blue Devils roll

On a night that was meant to honor future Lady Blue Devil stars, a current star dominated both sides of the court. Senior Lauren Carter scored 34 points, two shy of the Bellwood-Antis record, and Moshannon Valley did not manage a single point while she was on the court in the first half.
“She is an all around good basketball player and is very sound on both sides of the court. She provided a great example for the young kids here at the game on Lady Blue Devil Future Stars Night,” Bellwood-Antis Head Coach Nick Lovrich said.
More than 50 potential future Lady Blue Devils from third through sixth grade were on hand to witness Carter and the current squad of Lady Blue Devils pull away from Moshannon Valley in the second half en route to a 58-33 victory.
Bellwood-Antis began the game with an 14-0 run, led by 10 points from Carter, and they never trailed.
Six consecutive missed free throws midway through the first quarter allowed Moshannon Valley to stay within striking distance despite not scoring a point.
During the run Carter and Liz Erickson played relentless defense in the paint, blocking several shots and causing turnovers. It was not until both Carter and Erickson came out of the game that Moshannon Valley scored.
Amy Tomasko, the Lady Damsels\’ leading scorer with 12 points, made a layup and a 3-pointer just before the quarter ended to cut the lead to nine. However, Carter returned to the court to begin the second quarter, and Moshannon Valley stopped scoring.
Another big run, this one 7-0, put Bellwood-Antis ahead 21-5 with 3:18 left in the half. Carter picked up her third foul and headed to the bench for the rest of the quarter.
The Lady Damsels responded by scoring seven unanswered points of their own to cut the lead back to single digits. Shalee Hunter and Victoria Lombardo both made one of two free throws to break Moshannon Valley\’s run, but Tomasko made two of her own to keep the Moshannon Valley in the game, 23-14 at halftime.
“We got some younger kids in right there when the game was still close, and that is important, because we\’ll need them down the road in bigger games, and we want to make sure they\’re ready,” Lovrich said.
Carter returned from the bench to begin the third quarter and put the game away. She scored 10 points during a 14-5 run to put the Lady Blue Devils ahead 37-19 and on cruise control for the rest of the game.
Although the game was basically over, the drama of Carter\’s pursuit of the Bellwood-Antis record remained. She scored her 32nd point to make the score 54-27 early in the fourth quarter and was taken out of the game seemingly ending her quest, but she returned to the court with a little over three minutes remaining.
“We realized Lauren was only four points away from tying the record, and you don\’t get an opportunity to score that many points too often, so we decided to give her a chance,” Lovrich said.
Carter managed a layup to bring her total to 34, but missed two free throws late, and a pass into her with 10 seconds remaining flew over her head to leave her two points short.
The Lady Blue Devils\’ next game will be Monday when they travel to Southern Huntingdon.
