Bellwood Borough discusses routine business

Along with the issues surrounding the budget, Bellwood Borough Council members also had to deal with other business at their meeting earlier this week.
Council members had the task of appointing an individual to the Borough Water Authority, as Jim Kovac’s term comes to an end.
Two letters of interest were received and council voted to reappoint Jim Kovac for a five year term with a vote of 5-0 and one abstention.
Council also looked at requests for collection and disposal licenses. Currently the borough limits the licenses to two haulers, but is looking at different options for the upcoming year.
Representatives were on hand from Waste Management to share their ideas and experiences dealing with small communities like Bellwood.
Council member Chris Creek wanted to look at not limiting the number of haulers permitted in the borough. His feeling was more haulers could get the job done faster than limiting the number to two or three.
All council members agree the times set up for waste collection would continue to be limited. Currently haulers are permitted to collect on Tuesday and Thursday beginning at 7 a.m. Council agreed to keep this time frame, adding collection must end at 4 p.m. on those specified days.
Other concerns about trash collection included where the trucks would pick up, curb side versus alleys.
“To be honest,” said Creek, “I chose the hauler I have because they have alley pick up.”
The Waste Management representatives were interested in the conversation held by council members and agreed that they try to do whatever they can to accommodate their customers, which could include alley pick up, limited time frames and restrictions on truck size.
Council agreed to take bids from haulers in January as scheduled but will not limit the number of licenses. They will continue to look at this situation at upcoming meetings.
Council’s reorganization meeting will be held Tuesday, January 3 at 6 p.m. followed by the regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting schedule for 2006 will be the first Monday of each month, with the exception of January and September. Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. at the Borough Municipal Building, located at 616 Main Street, next to the library.
