Bellwood-Antis girls dominated by Southern Huntingdon Rockets

It was your basic strong experienced, veteran team against the young kids, cast into the action for the first time. That’s pretty much the way Bellwood-Antis looked on Monday night at Southern Huntingdon. The Lady Rockets jumped out early to take command and employed a full-court press that at times kept Bellwood-Antis from even getting a shot. With the exception of Lauren Carter, Bellwood-Antis had trouble putting the ball in the hoop.
The entire first quarter was a 15-4 run for Southern, who feature a lot of names that have been in the starting lineup, or at the very least in the program for three or four years. The Southern Huntingdon girls used a balanced attack-Lacie Snyder scored six points, Rachel Houck contributed five and Ashley Shope hit four straight free throws.
“We made some bad mistakes on our passes and it seemed to turn the tide of the game right from the beginning,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Nick Lovrich. “We made a couple turnovers and they scored some easy buckets. “
B-A senior Lauren Carter momentarily stopped the run with a basket to cut the early lead to 5-2 and then 5-0 sophomore Amanda Ingram hit the final bucket of the quarter to set the score at 15-4.
Carter went on a 5-2 B-A run to begin the second period with a basket, foul shot and then another basket to slice the B-A deficit to 17-9, the closest the Lady Blue Devils would get for the rest of the contest. Following a trey by Shope, Lady Blue Devil freshman Liz Erickson popped in a short jumper to cut the score to 20-11, but Southern scored the final seven points of the half to go into the locker room up 27-11.
It didn’t get any better after the intermission. Carter opened the scoring with a bucket, but that was to be the only score in the third quarter for Bellwood-Antis, who started the final quarter down 36-13.
Carter hit three baskets and Erickson added a pair of free throws in the fourth quarter, but didn’t get any support from their teammates, while Southern Huntingdon raced to 21 final-quarter points to run the final score to 57-21.
Carter had another monster game with 15 points and 16 rebounds, but no other Blue Devil could manage more than Erickson’s four points.
“We need to get better,” said Lovrich. “We need to have some younger people step up, we need to have some other people step up. We can’t depend on Lauren to score all our points for us. That’s one of the disadvantages about being a young team. We are going to have our bumps in the road at times. Tonight was one of those times. Hopefully, the road smoothes out for us quickly.
Southern Huntingdon (6-1), who were extremely physical all over the floor, were led by Hillary Shope and Rachel Houck with 11 points each, Renee Schmidt scored 10 points and Lacie Snyder added nine.
“I was saying to the officials before the game that I have been seeing these same kids in their lineup for four years. It makes a difference when you are a young team and you play a senior-oriented team like they have. They have been around and played a lot of games together. We just kind of ran into a buzzsaw with them.”

Junior Varsity
The Bellwood-Antis and Southern Huntingdon junior varsity teams were deadlocked 13-13 at halftime in the preliminary game, but Southern shut out the Lady Blue Devils in the third period, outscoring the B-A girls 14-0 in the quarter. Bellwood-Antis went scoreless through the seven-minute quarter plus another two and a half minutes in the fourth quarter, before Amanda Ingram tossed in a three-pointer with 4:35 remaining on the fourth-quarter clock in a 36-18 Southern Huntingdon victory.
Ingram led the B-A junior varsity with nine points and Victoria Lombardo pulled down 11 rebounds and Shalee Hunter added nine boards.
Ashley Hall scored 11 points for Southern and Brittney Gamble added eight.
