BEA prevails over Tyrone boys in battle of the eagles

Tyrone traveled to Wingate on Monday night for a game against Bald Eagle Area, that had been rescheduled from Friday night due to the snowstorm that hit the area. The Golden Eagles probably wished the game had been completely canceled, or at least moved to a later date.
In a battle of long-time rivals, with both schools sporting eagle mascots, Bald Eagle Area with its huge front line consisting of the six-foot plus Boone brothers jumped out to a 20-10 lead after one quarter and never looked back to defeat Tyrone 74-57.
In a battle that featured the Golden Eagles from Tyrone actually outscoring the Bald Eagles from BEA in field goals 25-24, Bald Eagle Area won this contest from the foul line, converting 25 of 32 free throws for a blistering 71 percent, while Tyrone only went to the line eight times, sinking three for a 37.5 percentage.
Bald Eagle Area kept the first-half offensive pressure on by carving out a 19-7 second-period advantage to go into the locker room at halftime with a 39-17 lead.
Tyrone tried to get back into the game in the third quarter, winning the third quarter scoring race 21-13 to cut their deficit to 52-38, but refusing to give in, Bald Eagle Area came back to more than match the Golden Eagles in the fourth quarter 22-19 to stretch the score to 74-57.
In the first Mountain Athletic Conference game for both schools, BEA opens 1-0 in the Mac and 3-2 overall, while Tyrone falls to 0-1 and 1-1.
Junior Doug Morrow led Tyrone with 16 markers, while Johnny Franco and Leonard Wilson each scored seven points. Pat Rougeux scored 23 for Bald Eagle, including 10 of 11 from the foul line. Cody Boone added 19 for BEA and twin brother Cory Boone scored 10.
“We just didn’t shoot well,” lamented Tyrone coach Mike Harris. “In the first half, we shot only seven-for-42. We were getting good looks, but just couldn’t put the ball in the basket. It was our first game in over a week, and we were rusty. In the second half, we played better, but kind of ran out of steam in the fourth quarter.
Bald Eagle with the Boone brothers, who are very tall and very good, is always a tough game for us down there. Our kids battled back and played awfully hard. The good thing is we get right back into it tonight with BG. I keep telling our kids, this is a marathon, not a sprint. We still have 22 games to get better.”
Junior Varsity
The Tyrone junior varsity improved to 2-0 for the season with a57-43 triumph over the Bald Eagle Area junior varsity. Wade Branstetter scored 11 points to lead Tyrone.
Tyrone puts out the welcome mat for Bishop Guilfoyle tonight. Junior varsity tip-off is set for 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow at 7:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles will travel to Hollidaysburg on Friday night to play in the Golden Tiger Holiday Roundball Classic. The tournament will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
