Tyrone junior high closes with victory

The Tyrone Area junior high football team closed out their 2005 season traveling the long road to Spring Mills to battle the Penns Valley junior high school.
The Little Eagles celebrated the end of a somewhat frustrating season with a solid 22-0 triumph.
Tyrone scored single touchdowns in the first, second and fourth quarters for the victory, with Josh Crowell leading the way with 165 yards on 19 carries, including touchdown runs of 24 and two yards, both in the opening half when The Eagles took a 14-0 lead into the locker room at the half.
Crowell raced 24 yards to open the scoring in the first quarter, and the PAT kick failed.
Then in the second quarter, Crowell capped a Tyrone drive by blasting two yards for his second score. Tyrone added a two-point conversion when Levi Reihart tossed a pass to Mark Mingle.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Orange and Black put one more touchdown on the scoreboard when Josh Graham scored on a five-yard run. Tyrone added the two-point PAT on a Jeremy Barlett run.
Mingle added 66 yards rushing on nine carries and also was on the receiving end of four Levi Reihart passes for an additionally 42 yards. Reihart completed six of 10 tosses for 62 yards. Johnny Shaffer caught two passes for 21 yards.
On defense, Cody Smith recovered a Penns Valley fumble. Wes Young and Matt Murray each recorded a quarterback sack and Mingle teamed with Dustin Weaver to share a sack.
“I was really pleased with our offense against Penns Valley and even more pleased with our defense where we have struggled some,” said Tyrone junior high coach Dan Plummer. “Through the middle of the season, we had trouble trying to hold teams to less points than the offense was scoring. We kept fighting and working hard. It would have been easy to just pack it in, but the kids never let up. We were finally able to put things together.
“It’s been a great season, the record doesn’t indicate the abilities that our kids showed.”
