Tyrone volleyball squad falls to Lady Bearcats

The Tyrone girls volleyball squad suffered a three to zero loss to the Huntingdon Lady Bearcats at the Tyrone Elementary Gym on Thursday evening. Huntingdon is the defending Mountain League champ and is undefeated in the early going again this season. The Huntingdon Lady Bearcats were the PIAA state champions in 2003 and qualified to play in the PIAAplayoffs last year as well.
The Lady ‘Cats won 25-14, 25-11 and 25-16, never really letting the Tyrone girls get into anything going.. In part this was due to mistakes and errors by the Lady Eagles themselves.
Lindsay Christine led the way with five service points for the Lady Eagles, Marissa Hoover had five kills, Kim Cherry added 11 assists and Ashley Roth had seven digs.
“Huntingdon proved that they are once again the team to beat in the Mountain League,” said Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg. “Our fundamentals broke down in serving and passing. You can’t do that against a quality team like Huntingdon.
“On a positive note, Marissa Hoover had probably her best match of the year, she played well at the net.”
Tyrone (4-2 overall, 2-1 in the conference) plays three straight games next week, against Mount Union at home on Tuesday, at Bellwood-Antis on Wednesday and at home on Thursday against Lewistown with all three matches beginning at 6 p.m. Then the Lady Eagles will travel to West Branch for a tournament which will begin at 8 a.m.
“We need to learn from this match,” said Eckberg. “We have matches next wek on three days in a row. We will work hard to prepare for them Even though we lost tonight, we can take some positives from it, dust this one off and go at it hard next week.”
