B-A downs Tyrone girls in local volleyball battle

When Tyrone and Bellwood-Antis met at Bellwood’s Senior High School gymnasium it was a volleyball match featuring a pair of local foes, who battle tooth and nail in every sport, no matter what the records or lineups.
Bellwood-Antis ruled the first two games 25-11 and 25-12, before Tyrone attempted to force the match to a fourth game, but came up just short falling 25-23 with the Lady Blue Devils improving to 5-0.
Lauren Carter led the way for the B-A girls with eight service points, 18 kills, five digs and four blocks. Haley Crider had five kills and 10 digs to go with seven service points. Chelsea Wilson had nine service points, six kills and three blocks. Meredith Palmer had five points, 10 digs and three kills and Nicole Ross added seven service points.
“The girls have continued to face tougher teams as the season progresses,” said Bellwood-Antis coach Stephanie Burner. “Tyrone has a strong team, but we were able to focus and take the match one game at a time! As the competition gets tougher, I feel the girls have continued to grow and have shown improvement every game.”
For the Lady Eagles, who fall to 5-3 overall, Lindsay Christine had four service points, Emily Lloyd had five kills, Kim Cherry had four service points and nine assists and Marissa Hoover had 16 digs.
“We got off to a slow start and that cost us dearly,” explained Tyrone coach Dave Eckberg. “Emily Lloyd has to get a lot of credit for her consistency which kept us close in that third game. That is her greatest strength-her consistency.
“Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to an opponent and realize you got beat by a better team. Tonight Bellwood was a better team.”
In the battle between junior varsity squads, Bellwood-Antis also defeated over Tyrone two games to none, 25-8 , 25-23 to record their fifth straight win. The Tyrone jayvee girls fall to 2-2.
Tyrone will host Lewistown today at 6 p.m. in the Tyrone Elementary School gym, while the Bellwood-Antis girls are at home this evening against Hollidaysburg beginning at 6 p.m.
