Tyrone Legion tops Sheetz to set up showdown with Hoss\’s

The Tyrone Legion snapped their three game losing streak just in time with a 12-2 victory over Sheetz Thursday evening. The Legion won to stay alive and set up an elimination game against Hoss\’s Friday in Tyrone.
Matt Morrissey led off the game with a walk, but was erased on a Tyler Golden fielder\’s choice. Golden went to third when Justin Schopp singled, and Derrick Soellner drove in Golden with a ground out. Tyler Gillmen brought home the second run of the game on a single that scored Schopp.
After a quiet Sheetz first inning, Jamie Levinson led off the top of the second inning with a triple, and he scored when Jesse Hertzler reached on an error.
Tyrone starter Tyler Golden, pitching for the third time against Sheetz, sat Sheetz down in order in the bottom of the inning, and the offense got things going again in the top of the third.
Schopp and Soellner singled to lead off the inning, and Gillmen hit a drive the ended up against the fence to score both runners. Gillmen made it to third on the play, and he scored when Levinson reached on an error to make the score 6-0.
Sheetz ran themselves out of a possible rally in the bottom of the third inning. Luke Dillen led off with a single, and Jeff Gates reached on an error that allowed Dillen to go to third. Bryant Steinbugl hit a dribbler back to Golden and Dillen edged too far off third base and was thrown out. Steinbugl then tried to steal second and was thrown out when Golden stepped off the mound and threw to second. Golden then got a ground out to leave Gates stranded at third.
The Tyrone Legion added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Morrissey reached on an error and Golden doubled to put two runners in scoring position. Schopp hit a sacrifice fly to score Morrissey, and Soellner doubled to score Golden. Soellner went to third on an error, and Gillmen drove him home with a ground out to put Tyrone ahead 9-0.
The Tyrone Legion managed only a walk by David Rodland in the fifth inning, and Sheetz scored their first run in the bottom of the inning.
Andy Burchfield doubled and scored on a Justin Cooper single to make the score 9-1, but Sheetz would get no closer.
Morrissey led off the sixth with a single, went to second on a Golden ground out, and after Schopp reached on an error both runners scored on a Soellner double.
Gillmen moved Soellner to third with a single, and Hoover hit a sacrifice fly to bring home an insurance run.
Justin Adams hit a ball that Matt Morrissey misplayed and it rolled the whole way to the fence for a four base error, but Golden got the final three outs for the 12-2 victory.
“We had to get this win, but it means nothing unless we can beat Hoss\’s tomorrow. Tyler Golden was solid on the mound. He only walked one guy, and when he does that he\’s pretty good,\” Tyrone Legion Manager Mike Boytim said.
Before the game against Sheetz, the Tyrone Legion completed a suspended game against Corporal Miller. Tyrone trailed 11-3 but made a determined effort to get back into the game.
After Mike Romano singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, Golden singled to put runners on second and third after an error by the center fielder. Two outs later, Morrissey walked to load the bases, and Levinson knocked in all three runs with a triple.
Corporal Miller scored four runs to take back a nine run lead in the top of the seventh inning highlighted by Andrew Criste\’s two-run double.
Tyler Hoover reached on an error to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, and Donnie Conrad singled to put runners on the corners. Romano reached on an error that scored Hoover, and then Golden knocked home Conrad with a single. One out later, Gillmen ripped an RBI single and Morrissey walked for the fourth time in the game.
Levinson followed with a strike out, but Soellner kept the game alive with a two-run single, and Hoover came through with an RBI single that made the score 15-13 and brought the tying run to the plate, but Conrad struck out on a full count to end the game.
“This loss hurts, because even though we came back, I know if we would have had all our starters for the entire game we would have won easily and would have been in much better position to make the playoffs.
“That said, it was an amazing effort by the guys, and something they should be proud of,” Boytim said.
The Tyrone Legion will host Hoss\’s tomorrow at 6 p.m. The winner of the game will advance to the first round of the George B. Kelley Federation playoffs.
Legion Notes: Golden\’s double against Sheetz was his first extra base hit of the season. The Tyrone Legion have played Hoss\’s twice this season, winning in Hollidaysburg 4-3 and winning in Tyrone 9-5. When a magic 8-ball was asked whether Tyrone will advance into the playoffs its response was YES.
