Tom Coleman selected as new Tyrone Area Athletic Director

The Tyrone Area School Board has selected Tom Coleman as the new Athletic Director to replace Tony Yaniello, who resigned to become more active in coaching.
Coleman has taught physical education and health for the Hollidaysburg Area School District’s Summer School program and was a Motivational Resource Room teacher at Tyrone Area Middle-High School. Tom has also served the Tyrone School District as a Community Service Coordinator, Saturday Detention Monitor, Security Officer and Crossing Guard.
Mr. Coleman has served as the Eagles head baseball coach since 2000. Mr. Coleman is a 1993 Tyrone Area graduate, who received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education from Penn State University in December, 1999.
Coach Coleman also has been working with Home Nursing Agency since 2000 as a Therapeutic Support Counselor, providing one-on-one and group counseling to children in need and assisting in creating and managing personal behavior plans unique to the individual’s needs.
“Tom will do a good job as Athletic Director,” said Yaniello concerning his successor. “He is familiar with Tyrone and the kids and he has a background in coaching, which I feel is very important for an athletic Director. He is a good people person, who is pleasant to talk to. I am very happy that he also got a teaching position at Tyrone. He has been trying to get into teaching here for some time. That is a big plus for him.”
Yaniello will remain in the district as a teacher and said he hopes to get back into coaching football and perhaps wrestling. With his athletic director duties, Yaniello had little time other than to coach track and field. Tony came to Tyrone to become the head wrestling coach in 1979 and remained in that capacity for the next 20 years.
Coleman will teach three classes of physical education, and help supervise lunch periods, in addition to his duties as athletic director, which Yaniello mentioned at the time of his resignation, as “a full time job” all by itself.
“I submitted a letter of interest and gave it a lot of thought,” said Coleman. “I talked it over with my family and my wife said go for it. I know the athletic director position takes a lot of time, but I am young and anxious to get started. I want to step forward with this position and continue the excellence of the Tyrone sports programs. It is going to be a challenge, but I am looking forward to the challenge. I want to thank the administration and especially Dr. William Miller for his support. Tyrone is a great community and I want to retire someday from the Tyrone Area School District. I picture this as a great opportunity.”
Coleman will officially begin his duties as Athletic Director on July 1, 2005, with Yaniello resigning effective June 30.
