CPHS new thrift shop location opens

Earlier this week, the Central Pennsylvania Humane Society opened its new thrift shop location at 22 E. Walton Ave. in Altoona, adjacent to TelPower.
The new shop features more parking and a larger interior shopping area with a separated space for furniture and bedding. The big brown building is easy to find and convenient to shoppers from Altoona or from north of the city.
According to executive director of CPHS, Dave Hopkins, shoppers coming from Bellwood, Tipton, Tyrone or other communities on that side of the city can drive down Pleasant Valley Blvd. and bear off to the right onto E. Walton and find the building just past the second red light on the right hand side.
The shop is open from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and features increased lines of clothing for women, children and men as well as games, toys, hardware items and furniture. The store will also feature regularly scheduled \”special\” sales and events designed to appeal to a wide variety of customers.
According to Hopkins, some restrictions apply to those bringing donated items to the store. The shop will only accept dropped off donations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays when staff is available to handle them. Donations must be taken to a rear entrance where they will be “checked in”.
Thrift shop operators are urging the donors to observe the rules and be patient when turning in donations. Store operators will also accept furniture in good condition but donors must make appointments with the store for the donated items to be evaluated before they can be accepted.
Donations cannot be left or abandoned outside the store, and CPHS administrators said that video monitoring equipment will be used to catch violators who dump unwanted, unsellable items outside the building when closed.
Proceeds from all the sales at the shop go directly to help the homeless animals at the shelter. The store is also looking for volunteer helpers who enjoy working with people and who may have some retail experience. Volunteer applications can be picked up at the store during working hours.
