Bellwood-Antis wrestlers defeat Juniata Valley to post first win

One team was bound to win their first dual meet of the year. Neither host Bellwood-Antis and visiting Juniata Valley had posted a win prior to their dual meet at Bellwood on Tuesday night. In a match that began shortly after 7:15 p.m., there were six first-period pins, three forfeits and two weights classes in which neither team fielded a wrestler. Bellwood-Antis recorded all six falls to continue a trend that began over the weekend at the Zeigler Chevrolet Blair/Huntingdon County Tournament to win their first dual of the season to go with four losses in a 51-16 triumph. The Blue Devils registered 15 falls among their 23 wins at the County tournament and improved their point total by two positions and 40 points over their 2003 total.
The varsity match began at the 135-pound weight class with Ronnie Wilson picking up a fast takedown and recorded the first fall over Tim Dickson in 0:50. Wilson (4-11) has won three of his last five matches, all by fall.
At 145, Dustin Harris (6-11) worked Tom Ayers for a quick takedown and then followed up with the fall in 1:17. Ronnie Colyer took Derrick Johnson down early, at 152 and worked for the Blue Devils’ third opening period fall in four weights at the 1:02 mark.
Josh Hanna (5-7) continued the pin parade at 171, with the fastest fall of the night, needing just 0:21 to deck Tom Phillips. Hanna’s last four wins, (three in the Zeigler Tournament) have all been by fall after beginning the season 1-4. In the Zeigler Tournament, Hanna pinned Phillips in 0:27 in the consolation semifinals.
Eli Colyer (10-4) grabbed a takedown over the Hornets’ Whitney Boyd at 119 and turned her for the fall at the 1:36. At 125, Ricky Shawley (7-7) followed suit by decking Amber Burk at the 0:40 mark, to get to the .500 mark on the season.
Brandon Beech (10-8) closed out the dual with a 5-1 decision over Willis Sneath. Beech opened the match with a takedown and added a second-period escape and third-period nearfall for the victory.
Dwayne Cherry (8-3) picked up a forfeit at 189 and ninth grader Don Partner (1-13) received a free ride at 112.
Juniata Valley won just three matches.
At 140, two-time defending state champ won for the third time this season over B-A junior Josh Ervine, picking up a 15-0 tech fall, but Ervine (9-7) forced Scott to wrestle the entire six minutes to earn the win. Mike Ballard lost a 16-0 tech fall to Toby Erb at 160, again lasting the full three periods. Erb pinned Ballard in just 2:44 on Saturday in the County Tournament.
Bellwood-Antis forfeited to Mark Powell at 215 and there were no matches at 275 and 103.
“We have been doing very well our last few outings” said Bellwood-Antis coach Ron Wilson. “We have been going out there, going back to the Tyrone match, even though we lost the match, I thought our kids went out there and put up a pretty strong effort. We went into the tournament on Saturday and they managed to come from pretty far back in the last round to pass Altoona in that tournament. Our kids got a lot of falls and that just carried through and we got a lot of falls in this match too.
“I would have liked to see a little bit more aggressiveness in a couple situations, but for the most part our kids were out there doing the things they needed to do to get by. That’s about all we can ask of them.”
Bellwood-Antis will host a double dual on Saturday morning with Southern Huntingdon and Tussey Mountain. Action will begin at 11 a.m.
