Fire company convention coming to Bellwood in August

Bellwood’s Excelsior Fire Company will be the host fire company for a three-day convention that will be held next month for the Central District Volunteer Fireman’s Association.
The group has solicited memberships to help sponsor the event. As of last Friday, it had three dozen sponsors signed up to assist the event with a financial contribution.
Among those sponsors is the Bellwood Branch of M & T Bank. On Friday morning, Branch manager Vaia Pentsas and regional manager Matt Calhoun presented a check for $1,000 as a silver-level sponsor for the event.
On the receiving end of the check was the president of the Central District Volunteer Fireman’s Association, Robert Whiteford. All three posed for The Daily Herald cameras outside the M & T branch in Bellwood along with one of the engines from the Excelsior Fire Company.
“We are proud to be involved in the organization and to be involved as a sponsor for this gathering,” said Calhoun.
Whiteford explained M & T’s willingness to be involved in the event.
“The Excelsior Fire Company is the host company,” said Whiteford. “M & T jumped right on line and said they wanted to be a silver sponsor.
“We get the silver sponsor money and they get a sign to hang in their business to let everyone know they are a part of the fire company,” explained Whiteford.
As of last Friday, Whiteford said the event had nine gold sponsors, nine silver sponsors and 18 bronze sponsors.
The Central District Volunteer Fireman’s Association is comprised of member companies from as far south as Cumberland, MD and as far north as Kane. Whiteford said the association also has members as far west as Westover in Cambria County and to the east in communities such as Mifflenburg and Lewistown.
The fire companies will meet for three days on August 19, 20 and 21 to participate in meetings, a memorial service, contests, games and a party, according to Whiteford.
